Check Out Clayton Harris’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Clayton Harris.

Clayton Harris

Hi Clayton, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in Louisiana, my dad had always been in the website and graphic design business, and I always thought that’s what I would go on to do. But around the time when I was a senior in high school, I realized there was something more that resonated with me – and that was making films. Watching movies was always my favorite thing to do as a kid. As a matter of fact, you couldn’t go one day without me quoting some line from a movie I had watched over and over again. When I saw the potential in filmmaking as a career, it was as clear to me as anything else before that this would be my passion. After taking a film class in the summer before I went to college and creating my first passion project about my senior year of high school after I had graduated, the pieces fell together for me to start my career as a filmmaker.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One thing I’ve always struggled with, like many others do, is knowing what my place in the world is and what my purpose is. Something I’ve had to learn is the hard times are there for a reason – to help us grow when we need it the most and to become an even better version of ourselves than we would have ever previously thought. I’ve wanted to quit at times, wanted to just throw my hands up when I was tired of editing for hours and days on end. But no matter what, I always come back to the simple love and passion I have for filmmaking. It’s the one thing that even when my day job is exhausting, and I’m ready to be done, it gives me a creative outlet to realize what is possible if I just put my mind to it. Being able to have a medium to pursue that passion and then get to create videos and films that elicit emotional responses from others is truly a blessing that I will never take for granted, no matter how difficult the journey may have been.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am, at my core, a storyteller. This is such a simple idea, but it is central to why I love video and filmmaking – to tell stories. This is what inspired me to create the name for my own video production company, The Storyline Co. At the center of every great video and film project is a story – whether it is good or not, you can’t have a film without a story to tell. There are endless possibilities for visual storytelling with a camera, and I am most in my element when I have exactly that. Whether it is showing a bride and groom’s beautiful wedding day or showing how a company got started and how they are making a difference in the world, I am always looking for stories to tell and how to best communicate these stories to the world. I take every project I take on just as seriously as the next one, and I won’t settle for something that looks or feels just “fine.” I pride myself in my ability to create beautiful and unique imagery and then create a meaningful and timeless story that can inspire myself and others down the road. Most of all, I strongly believe if you treat others like you would want to be treated, then you will go far in life, and that’s what I want people to remember about me when they work with me.

What makes you happy?
My family makes me happiest most of all. I have a beautiful wife named Ola and our two puppy dogs, Piper and Lucy. When I’m not taking walks with them or going to the park, I love to go on adventures with my wife to just about anywhere in the world and make amazing memories together. That could be going on a hike, going to the movies, taking a weekend trip together, or even something as simple as a coffee date. As the great Stevie Ray Vaughn’s song goes, “She’s my sweet little thing, she’s my pride and joy.” In addition to my family, one way I really am able to find joy is through music; I’ve always been around music my whole life, with a mom and dad that sang literally every Sunday in church growing up, and then leading to me eventually following in their footsteps. Music is another outlet for me to express myself creatively in a way that I can’t necessarily with filmmaking. It’s something that most people can relate to in some way, and I absolutely love when I find a new song that resonates with me. Singers and musicians like John Mayer, Coldplay, Ben Rector, and Chris Stapleton are just some of my absolute favorites.
