Today, we’d like to introduce you to Demia Avery.
Hi Demia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have had the podcast Whatchu’Doin Wilmington for 3 years now and have recently changed the title to “Whatchu’Doin NC.”
My podcast used to highlight the positive people, places, and things in Wilmington, North Carolina. However, I decided that I was limiting myself to just one area. North Carolina is an absolutely beautiful state, and it has so many things going on that I should talk about all the great things that happen In and around the state. And I couldn’t be happier about my choice to do so.
In addition to my podcast, I have expanded my journalistic skills to working as a freelance entertainment reporter for WHQR. My job is to highlight undiscovered artists and entertainers in the area. This is an absolute dream job for me.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting the podcast was not exactly a hard road at first. It was just a little challenging because I was new to the city. I didn’t know too many people, so I felt like a little fish in a big pond. But once I got my feet wet, I took off.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My podcast’s intent was to highlight the positive people places, and things in the area and that’s exactly what I was doing, however I noticed one area slowly became dominant. I love it, but interviewing a lot of the entrepreneurs in the area became the driving force of the podcast… I wanted to do more!
So my plan is to show more of what’s going on around the state of North Carolina, explore other areas, and offer interviews.
I am extremely proud of all the accomplishments and accolades that I received throughout my podcast journey. However, one of my career highlights was when I had the opportunity to interview TV legend “Erik Estrada” from Chips. I remember watching him on television as a kid. It was a dream come true.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I live in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Anyone who knows me can tell you that I absolutely adore WILMINGTON! The reason is simple… The ocean! I love the idea of having a hard day at work and being able to release whatever tensions I have and go sit by the water. There are certain parts of the city that make me feel like I’m always on vacation.
I don’t know if there’s anything that I absolutely dislike about the city. We have the normal things that a city would have, i.e., traffic. I just believe that in any place that you live, you can find a little bit of peace if you look for it.
