Check Out Dre Vega’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dre Vega.

Hi Dre, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born in Mexico and raised in Durham, NC, I am the second oldest of five. I am self-taught and very motivated by nature. I love everything that has to do with arts and crafts. I would say I do not have a specific art style, but my main focuses are painting with acrylics, watercolor, and sculpting with polymer clay. I have always had a very strong passion for art. I didn’t realize I was good at it until someone compared my art to my late grandmother. She was the artist of the family. Now it’s me, and I am thrilled.

I am self-taught, as I’ve always been such an introvert. Growing up, that stopped me from asking for help or guidance with art, but I am happy to say I’ve come such a long way from where I used to be. I am an introvert that’s good with people (:

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Being self-taught, it is harder for people to recognize your unique work. I lost my grandmother at a young age, and I was unable to learn from her amazing painting skills so she inspires me to keep pushing forward.

Even though I am still and introvert, I don’t let that get in the way of important things, as I am now finally showing off my work to the public and learning new things as I go.

Mistakes will always be made, and as clumsy as I am, I have made ALOT of them. Straight lines are not for me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
My paintings style varies from day to day. One day I want to paint the outline of a human being, the next, I’m sculpting with polymer clay, a slice of cheese, hehe, and two days after that, I’m customizing sneakers. I am different from other artists as I do not care what people have to say about my art. I do it because I truly love it, and if someone else loves it, great. If not, it’s just another one of my artworks I can keep and not be heartbroken about having to give it up. But to the people who have supported me, Gracias!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Nature. Nature and… Nature. If there’s anything I would ever only have to focus on, it would be just that. I’m not the biggest TV fan; I can’t seem to focus when it comes to reading, so books and blogs are not it. I like observing, touching, feeling. Hand on all day long!
