Today we’d like to introduce you to Eboni Allen.
Hi Eboni, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Eboni Allen and I am a proud Durham native. I graduated from UNCG with my bachelors in biology. I am happily married with two beautiful children. Birthwork came to me after I thought I knew what I wanted to do in my life.
I gave birth to my son in December 2017 and I felt so empowered by my birth, although it did not go exactly according to plan. I felt that if I had a doula. That maybe I would have been able to succeed in my original birth plan. I wanted to make sure that women were well educated and supported through pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum. I chose to certify through Birth Arts International as a birth doula due to their holistic views on pregnancy and birth. I have since then expanded my business to include placenta encapsulation services, breastfeeding classes, and packaged herbal blends.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely been a challenge. I started working as a doula when my son was one year old and sometimes it was hard securing childcare at odd times of the day or night. Then in 2019, I decided to go back to school to get my masters; which I just graduated within STEM education from North Carolina State University. Then of course in 2020, COVID made the world shut down, and I also had my daughter. All of the while, I have been maintaining my job as a high school biology teacher.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I enjoy being a birth doula and a placenta encapsulation specialist. A doula is someone who serves as a support person during pregnancy, labor and delivery. I really admire the process of birth as it shows the strength we have. It puts a newfound respect for the body, and it’s so beautiful to see a new life come into this world. I recently fell in love with placenta encapsulation. The placenta is an organ that is grown during pregnancy and keeps baby alive during their time in the womb. It is such a unique organ and every single placenta, just as every pregnancy; is different. What sets me apart from others is that I am an educator as well. I enjoy teaching about birth work and encapsulation and my background in education allows me to do so easily.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Just to be mindful of others and just how impactful our day to day decisions can be on to everyone else around us.
