Today we’d like to introduce you to Hydia Adon
Hi Hydia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a little girl who grew up watching cooking shows like Chopped, Barefoot Contessa, Rachael Ray, Worst Cooks in America, The Pioneer Woman, Guy’s Grocery Games and Beat Bobby Flay. I have always enjoyed baking and cooking. It gave me a sense of individuality in a household filled with my three brothers, an uncle, a grandfather, and a mother who worked a lot. I saw my father occasionally, but not as much as I would have liked. This environment influenced my childhood well-being.
Watching my mother attempt to make a chocolate cake, seeing my late father grow and make his own hot peppers, observing my uncle whip up peanut butter brownies, and learning recipes from my late grandmother made me realize that baking and cooking are more than just following recipes. It’s about the love and care that goes into it. I cherish the memories of my mother letting us lick the chocolate batter off the whisk, my uncle surprising us with his delicious brownies, and my late father’s excitement when he shared his homemade hot peppers with us. My late grandmother trusted me with her secret ingredients, ensuring I wouldn’t tell anyone.
Having a safe space in my childhood home, despite the challenges, helped me realize that I could share my gifts through baking. These experiences eventually contributed to my journey with Vegan Sweet’s & Treat’s, even at times when I didn’t fully recognize the impact they would have on my life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a family business has not been easy, and it has certainly had its challenges. One of the ongoing struggles is maintaining the strength to move forward and keep the momentum going while also juggling a full-time job. After my father passed away in 2022, I took a momentary pause from baking to allow myself to grieve. Shortly after my father’s passing, my grandmother also passed away. During this time, I began to lose my interest in baking, especially since these two were the people I used to shadow in the kitchen.
However, I have since regained my passion for baking and am now balancing it alongside my work and responsibilities as a wife. I take each day as it comes and continue to improve Vegan Sweet’s & Treat’s while transitioning and evolving the company alongside my husband.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I would love the opportunity to share more about my work. Currently, I am focused on the healthcare sector while temporarily closing Vegan Sweets & Treats to enhance our services and prioritize our customers’ needs.
I specialize in creating vegan desserts that taste just as delicious as traditional dairy desserts. Additionally, I cater to individuals with severe allergies, including gluten, dairy, eggs, crustaceans, soy, nuts, etc. I am grateful for the knowledge that allows me to provide options for those seeking a healthier lifestyle while enjoying desserts without compromising their dietary restrictions.
I take pride in using my creativity and DIY skills in baking, especially since everything I make is from scratch. What sets me apart is my genuine compassion for our customers, which drives me to help others through Vegan Sweets & Treats. Whether it’s feeding the homeless, accommodating a customer’s needs, or using my talents to bring a smile to someone’s face, I am truly passionate about what I do.
Vegan Sweets & Treats is not solely focused on making a profit; it’s about educating our customers and building a community. I aim to create a diverse community where everyone can learn about healthy options and find what’s best suited to their needs. This skill set has been enriched by my experience in the healthcare industry and my bachelor’s degree in psychology, which allows me to inspire and encourage a positive perspective on vegan desserts.
I understand the importance of providing choices for a healthier lifestyle, and I feel thankful for the opportunity to do so. If establishments like Vegan Sweets & Treats had existed during my younger years, I believe I could have improved my lifestyle much earlier.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was that kid who had an Easy-Bake Oven and would try to dye my Barbie doll’s hair and curl it with a curling iron. I was also an outspoken child, especially about issues I felt strongly about, which often made me feel different, especially since I had three brothers and was raised by authoritarian parents. Although I didn’t talk much and didn’t become social until middle school, there were times when, if I felt comfortable, people would catch glimpses of my silly and social side.
I had a variety of interests growing up. I loved watching “Law & Order,” cooking shows, and DIY programs about houses and cars. Personality-wise, depending on the situation, I was either very nice or mean. This was because I struggled to balance my emotions. There were times when I enjoyed being around people and times when I didn’t, often due to depression.
I found comfort in cooking, baking, art, and spending time outside in the sun. These experiences shape what I contribute to Vegan Sweet’s & Treats, as they help others feel less alone and encourage them to be themselves.
