Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamila Martin.
Hi Jamila, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have always had a love for anatomy and physiology. I knew I wanted to do something in the medical field. For the longest, I thought I wanted to be an OB/GYN; however, that quickly changed after my own bout(s) of physical therapy. After sustaining 2 ACL reconstructions and recovery following an Achilles rupture, I lived in physical therapy at one point. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. Through my several bouts of PT, I was able to see first-hand how PTs are truly able to help people reach their goals. It was a perfect bridge of merging my love for anatomy and staying in the healthcare field; I was sold. It was not until my second year of PT school that I was introduced to pelvic health PT. My clinical instructor on my rotations was a pelvic health therapist, in which she completely changed my outlook on the profession. I knew coming in, like most people, I wanted to work with athletes. However, that summer, I was able to work with women in all stages of their lives. How rewarding it was just to help them reach their goals that many people take for granted. Such as being able to laugh without worrying on peeing on myself or making sure to use the bathroom before I leave the house.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been some lows. When I first came out of school (14 years ago), pelvic health was not an area of physical therapy that people were very aware of. There were not many jobs in that area of PT. So grateful that I have been able to work for Origin in which the focus is to bring more awareness to pelvic health.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a physical therapist that specializes in pelvic health. I have experience working with women men, and currently training to service children as well. I am most proud of treating this population and the overall gratitude that’s demonstrated following doing something that most of take for granted. Simple things such as laughing, or sneezing without having leakage, or being able to have sexual intercourse pain-free. I think what sets me apart from others is the different areas and extensiveness of my training and overall compassion to treat this population.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My best childhood memory is playing sports. I have played basketball and volleyball my whole childhood. My dad coached most of my childhood sports teams.
