Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Marshall.
Hi Jordyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a licensed nail artist currently located in Cary North Carolina I specialize in Gel-X extensions and any type of nail art you can imagine.
I am originally from Detroit Michigan, however I relocated to Raleigh North Carolina many years ago. I originally started off my career in early childhood education, I worked in childcare for many years, and then went on to work in customer service where I worked my way up from being up from an entry-level call center representative to a manager of the training and quality department.
I ended up working for a company that was a small, locally owned business located in Hillsborough North Carolina. I was just really unhappy there; I didn’t feel appreciated I didn’t feel valued and I honestly went into a slight depression. So, one day I decided I was going to go to nail school… I wanted to do something that was fun and exciting and something that would bring joy to other people, make people overall, not just women, feel beautiful! So I went to nail school and I went to the school in Greensboro; I drove an hour each way every day because I was living in Durham at this point. Once I was finished with nail school I needed a job desperately, and it seemed like nobody would give me an opportunity.
So I reached out to a nail tech that I was familiar with who was also from Detroit Michigan, Azia Harris of Azia B’s. I told her I needed a job and she hired me on the spot! That’s actually how I got into Gel-X because I didn’t learn Gel-X in school so it was something that was exclusive to that salon at the time.
I jumped in head first watching everything that every other nail tech and business owner around me was doing, developing plans about how I wanted my brand to be represented because from the very beginning I knew that not only did I want to be a nail tech and salon owner, but I wanted to be an entire brand; someone that was encouraging to other females and just people in general in the community, someone who could show people that if I could do it so could you. I worked hard I stayed up late at night taking clients day in and day out, taking any client that came through the door.
I built a clientele from strictly walk-ins in a year’s time and it was amazing to me however it all really came crashing down when COVID-19 happened and the beauty industry took an extreme hit, we had to close down.
The shutdown lasted a few months that felt like forever and then we were back at work. A lot of my clients did come back because a lot of people were just ready to love themselves again and that felt good we were rolling and things seem normal. COVID-19 was still very prevalent in the community and we had to be very careful, different things were being required of the beauty professionals, than had ever been required before, we had to take extra precautions and clean, clean, clean! People were just very hesitant about even being in a public space at all, especially for what some see as unnecessary.
During the time I also found out that I was pregnant with twins so I decided that I had to take a whole new approach, that I needed to make sure that I was providing my clients with exactly what they were expecting from me in order to keep us all happy and healthy and safe, so I decided to break away from the traditional salon and open my own Salon Suite; thus B.Jordyn nails were born! I continued to practice and study and started to expand my reach on social media.
I started to advertise myself more, post more pictures of my work, be more involved with the community, and my clientele skyrocketed and in the summer of 2021, I was invited to be one of the nail artists at New York Fashion week and have been invited to return again this year. It was literally like watching my dreams come true.
In March 2022, I got a call from Jazmine Sullivan’s team and I was blessed with the opportunity to be able to service her for her Raleigh concert during her Heaux Tales Tour, that’s probably at this point my biggest accomplishment is it one of the things that I’m most excited about and most proud about.
It all unfolded right before my eyes and I’m still in awe of what I’ve built and what I continue to build because there is no limit. I don’t know what else to say past this point because it’s still being written
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s definitely been a very difficult journey and one of the most difficult things has just been the criticism and skepticism of almost everyone around me. Nobody thought that I could do it; nobody thought black women could do nails. Everybody asked me literally “what makes you think that you can do this, how much money do you think you’re gonna make?”
Outside of that it’s just kind of what we’re all facing right now, the coronavirus really was a scary time; it’s still is a scary time and it leaves a lot of uncertainty for any entrepreneur but especially the beauty industry.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed nail technician and I specialize in après gel-X extensions I also like to say that I am an artist, I specialize in almost any nail art that someone can imagine. I enjoy hand-painted nail art and I feel like what sets me apart most of all is that I want to be challenged; I want to do something that looks like it’s impossible, and I wanna share that with the world.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve always felt like I’m an extremely lucky person I win tickets on the radio, I win scratch-offs, and things just always seem to fall in the place for me so you know there’s that.
But I like to think that it’s not luck, that I’m blessed, that God just doesn’t play about me and that’s just kind of what I say… it’s not so much luck but I know everybody believes something different, so whatever you need to to decide it is, that’s fine, but for me, I’ve been extremely blessed.
God has had his hands on me and my business since the moment I formulated the thought of my business.

I am so proud of this young lady and of her many accomplishments. Yes, I agree with her God has given her many talents and He is certainly blessing her nail business. I have not had an opportunity to have my nails done by Ms Marshall because each time I attempt to make an appointment she’s already booked. I will continue without hesitation to make an appointment until I get one As I am very excited And determine to have my nails done by her. I hope and pray that other young black entrepreneurs will take heed to her accomplishments and know that they can Excel also. Again I say I’m very proud of this young woman and will importantly I am so very happy and excited that she is very much aware that we are not lucky but blessed by God when Good things happen in our lives.
