Check Out Katie Friedman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Friedman.

Hi Katie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My husband, Lennie, and I have dreamed for decades about opening an artsy coffee shop together. For years, we would drive down Six Forks Rd and pass this adorable little building and talk about what a perfect spot it would be if it ever came for sale. When the opportunity arose in 2024, we decided it’s now or never, and jumped on the chance to own this historic shop.

We have implemented the first part of our plan, gathering top notch local artists and makers to showcase what NC has to offer. We have locally made everything: from gorgeous original artwork and wall decor, functional pottery, handblown and stained glass, witty charcuterie boards & needlepoint, handmade knives, jewelry, scented candles & soaps, right down to our tasty selection of snacks.

Once we are permitted by Wake County, we will start work on the second part of our plan. We will renovate and reopen as a full coffee shop, with handcrafted espresso drinks, tea, and local baked goods, set in a charming historic building with a beautiful deck overlooking an acre of gardens.

We look forward to creating a welcoming community space to gather indoors or out, over a great cup of coffee, and browse some quality local artisans.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Finding amazing local talent has been a joy. As I met with artists, they have introduced me to more people in their community and our art & gift selection has exploded in a very short amount of time. There is something magical about bringing a beautifully handmade object into your own space or gifting it to another. Art is the most basic connection to what makes us all human. And in a world where you can buy any plastic item with a click of a button, supporting our local artistic community is more important than ever.

Gathering over food and drink, with face to face conversations and real laughter, not just “lols” is another vitally human need. And while the coffee end has moved a bit more slowly as we work our way through the permitting process, we are confident that our plan will be approved. We have received such enthusiastic feedback from our neighbors and local community about becoming a coffee shop, and we hope to serve you and provide that gathering space soon!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have always loved art, and now I’m grateful to be part of our vibrant local art community. My appreciation for the arts—especially oil painting—has been a lifelong passion. I had the opportunity to study under the late Frank Covino, a renowned artist whose portraits include U.S. presidents and cultural icons like Marvin Gaye. After raising our three children, I’ve found great joy in creating a welcoming space where people can enjoy a stellar cappuccino while browsing the diverse and beautiful artistic creations North Carolina has to offer. Through our art and coffee shop, I’m excited to help foster connection, inspiration, and a deeper appreciation for local creativity.

Lennie has the business mind. After a decade as an offensive lineman in the NFL, he earned his MBA from Duke University. He has gone on to specialize in managing and growing manufacturing businesses. He started at John Deere and is currently with Vetovation- a local company that brings innovative equipment to the veterinary world.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
We would not have been able to bring this vision to life without both Bridget Scammon and Yvonne Shirley. Both of these ladies worked at this store when it was “When Pigz Fly.” They advised, advocated and assisted us every step of the way. We are fortunate that they decided to continue employment with our new store, we couldn’t have asked for more.
We would also be remiss not to mention Penelope Morgan of “Gotta be Penelope’s” hot pepper jelly, and Donna Yelle of “Rhae’s of Glass.” Both of these makers showcased their creations at When Pigz Fly and have also been at our side, encouraging and helping in every way possible. We are so grateful.

Bartons Creek Coffee is lucky to have this fantastic group of women in our corner!
