Today we’d like to introduce you to Kie Tate.
Hi Kie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve had a camera in my hand for as long as I can remember. It didn’t hit me that I had a passion for photography until I was in school for graphic design. I had a thing for pictures already and I would stay up all night messing around with editing software putting different graphics and fonts on my images.
As a teenager, I wasn’t thinking much of being a photographer, it didn’t click. Around 2012 after having my son, a lightbulb went off and I decided to go back to school for photography. I graduated from Living Arts College and shortly after I would practice with my camera a lot. First with nature and my son. Then I would do it here and there as a side job.
I didn’t get serious until 4 years ago. I obtained my LLC in 2021 and have a creative space with a fellow photographer and friend in the Raleigh area. I am officially full-time as of January 2022. I am very proud of myself and how far I’ve come.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being an entrepreneur will never be easy and like most people, I started with a 9-5, working my way into becoming my own boss full-time. Depending on your business and what you produce to live is a faith walk. One of the struggles I have faced is when my faith and belief in myself have run short, I feel like quitting. Then I remember why I started in the first place. I have passion and love behind what I do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a professional & published photographer. I specialize in editorial portraiture; the creative playground where I can get my feet wet and really dive in. I love starting with a blank canvas and having to think of the colors, theme, wardrobe, hair, makeup looks, and putting sets together.
I’m known for this very thing! I’m proud of my work standing out as being magazine-worthy. I am set apart from other photographers because people recognize the passion behind the image. I don’t have to say a word and they automatically can feel it.
What does success mean to you?
I simply define success as never giving up. As long as you keep pushing forward and learn from your mistakes, then you are progressing.
