Check Out Krika Bradsher’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krika Bradsher

Hi Krika, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sophia Sunflower Salon has been in existence for 25 years. It was started in Clayton NC in 2000, then moved to downtown Raleigh. Sophia Sunflower Salon is a natural hair care salon owned and operated by Krika Bradsher. I opened this salon before the natural hair industry got big in NC. I have always been natural and what I mean by natural is hair with no chemicals or straighteners. I recall seeing so many commercials and I took notice that there were so many women who looked like me and had curly and kinky hair. I had a strong feeling that this would be the new thing for African American women. I recall hearing and speaking with other salon owners who thought I was crazy for specializing in natural hair. I followed my instincts and people followed me and was ready for the change. So many women were afraid to make the switch but they were tired of loosing hair from relaxers.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it has not been a smooth road because I realize that hair is not a necessity. So people will do their own hair which is their choice . Some struggles were people going to home salons then later they come back. To feel in the gap when I am not in the salon I formulated my own hair care line MYHONEYCHILD which was developed for Afro American hair.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in Type 4 hair. Type 4 hair is thick dense naturally curly hair. This is the best hair in my opinion it will do practically any style. I have people who love to come to my salon because I am a one women operation, and when it’s your time to get serviced I am only with you. This gives me time to really get to know my client as my client to know me. I feel this is important. I want my client to trust me and know that I care about them. I enjoy educationing my client on their hair. Most clients are amazed at how I am able to double strand twist their hair in 45 minutes.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was very shy and reserved. I knew I liked helping people and I loved healthcare. And still do to this day. I wanted to become an RN. My mother asked me what about cosmetology school. I guess she saw something in me that I never knew. I completed the program and later went back to get my instructors liscence to become a cosmetology teacher. I enjoy helping my customer with their hair dilemmas so
I wrote a book for white parents who adopt black children and it is also for black parents who maybe did not get the opportunity to understand their natural hair and are struggling with styling their own child’s.
