Check Out Master Kie’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Master Kie.

Hi Master Kie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all started in middle school when I joined the chorus and learned how to read music. I actually stayed in chorus through high school even though I was shy and did not like singing in front of people, despite being forced to do a solo my senior year… whew!

I took the knowledge of reading sheet music and applied it to teaching myself the piano. It was then that I discovered that I could compose my own music. When I got to college (UNC Charlotte) in 2003, I saw a couple of guys playing music production software called Fruity Loops.

I decided to play around with it myself and thought wow this is a cool and different way to create music! And so I stuck with it to this day. Being that I am a shy, introverted person, music production allowed me to express myself in a way that makes ME feel comfortable and I make sure those emotions translate through my beats.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t always a smooth road. I definitely had to take a step back when I had kids (2 girls) and focus on my family, but once they got older I felt the music calling me back and decided to share my time and make it work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in music production, specifically in the genre of hip-hop, but I can create in other multiple genres as well. I am known for my “beat stories”.

Whenever I release a project, I like to tell a story or give a lesson and my listeners love it. I don’t want people to just HEAR my work but to also understand it, to feel it the way I do, or interpret it in their own way. My current project, “The Tones of Roy G. Biv” comes with a “coloring book” that serves as a guide to the sounds.

I think this is what sets me aside from many other producers; the type of work I put into my projects. I don’t create just to create or simply because I happen to be creative. I have to be in the mood… I have to have emotions running through me, good or bad. I need a reason, goal, or purpose. This is why my music will always be timeless.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think it is important to take risks. You just need to know which risks are worth taking. Always weigh the outcome! I feel risky every time I decided to step on a stage and put myself there, lol.

But it’s always worth it in the end because I have made many fans and met many dope creatives along the way. Sometimes stepping on one stage allows you to step on another.
