Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Lindskar.
Hi Melissa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My artistic journey began in 2019/2020 when we lost our family dog – Kaylee. The grief and missing of her was immediate but it was when I first stumbled into art that I began to process the emptiness Kaylee left behind. I have since then developed a passion for art I never knew existed within me. I am also passionate about various social issues and wants to contribute to charities that work for positive change in society. My first artwork was sold to charity, and I want to continue to contribute to a better society through my art. I am a self-taught artist and I am is inspired by everything from the feelings I have at the moment or from a song or the smells of nature or a specific event and even the characters I have around me. With my abstract artworks, often full of acrylic textures, I want to convey a feeling to the viewer that all emotions are welcome to exist and be present. That the viewer can affirm the emotions they are feeling at the time and from those feelings feel alive along with the painting. In this way, the paintings are meant to follow their owner through life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes and no… I just started selling my art on a regular basis back in Sweden and I was amazed that there were actually strangers wanting my artwork in their most private space – their homes – I was incredibly thankful, but then me and my family relocated to Apex, NC which was hard for me as an artist because along with everything with the move and our children’s needs I had no idea how to navigate the artworld I the US. I’m still trying figuring it out… I have no connections here so I’m starting from scratch basically, everything to finding materials I like (new brands and stores) to shipment company, to figuring out how to do the taxes…
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I use usually only acrylic to create structures in my paintings. I love colors but also earthy tones. I am proud of my curiosity and development to use different tools and to shape the colors to a way that I feel is calming and interesting to look at. The paintings makes you want to look at it and make you use your own imagination. I would say that the mix of colors and different layers and also how I portrait different details in the artworks sets me apart from other artist.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I still have a lot to discover! We moved her just about 4 months ago, and so far, the weather has been one of the best things… We´ve also met so many kind people that made our transition to the country so much nicer than we ever could have imagined. The least I would say that I´m use to a “center” in our cities in Sweden and here everything is spread out, so I need to get used to that.
