Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Eley, Jr.
Hi Michael, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began in the 7th grade as a student at what was then Wake Forest-Rolesville Middle School. It was there that my teacher, Mrs. Jenelle Preston, introduced me to the Wake Forest Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration held at Friendship Chapel Baptist Church in Wake Forest, NC. Participating in that event was a defining moment—not only did I place in the contest, but I also met Mrs. Preston’s father, the then Senior Pastor of Friendship Chapel, Rev. Dr. Enoch E. Holloway, Sr.
Throughout my high school years, Dr. Holloway became a pivotal mentor in my ministry journey, offering unwavering support and ultimately naming me a Son of the Church. After graduating from Wakefield High School in 2014, I pursued higher education at Hampton University in Hampton, VA, where I earned my degree in 2018. Faced with the decision to remain in Virginia or return home, I felt led to attend Wake Forest University School of Divinity in Winston-Salem, NC.
Before my move, I received a life-changing phone call from Dr. Holloway, inviting me to join the staff at Friendship Chapel as the Young Adult Minister. I accepted the call and began commuting from Winston-Salem to Wake Forest on weekends, faithfully serving through preaching and ministry leadership.
In 2020, when the pandemic brought unexpected transitions, I returned home and devoted even more time to Friendship Chapel, helping to guide the church into the new digital era. This expanded role led to my appointment as Youth and Young Adult Pastor.
In April 2023, I embraced a new opportunity to serve as Interim Pastor of First Baptist Church of Clinton, Inc., in Clinton, NC. During my time there, I experienced significant growth in ministry while continuing to serve the congregation at Friendship Chapel.
Then, in August 2024, I was humbled and honored to be elected as the Senior Pastor of Friendship Chapel Baptist Church, succeeding the esteemed Rev. Dr. Enoch E. Holloway, Sr., who faithfully led the church for 42 years. This new chapter is a testament to God’s divine orchestration, and I am grateful for the foundation laid before me as I step forward in faith and service.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a smooth road- navigating pastoral ministry succession is easier when you have a relationship with your predecessor and are established in the church and community.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In addition to serving as Senior Pastor, I am also a Career Technical Educator in the Wake County Public School System, where I equip students with practical skills that prepare them for life beyond the classroom.
As a Pastor – I specialize in intergenerational ministry, ensuring that every person—regardless of age or background—feels seen, valued, and included in the life of the church.
As an Educator – I bridge the gap between theory and real-world application, creating a learning environment where students engage in honest, relevant conversations about financial literacy and personal growth. My goal is to empower them with the knowledge and confidence to navigate life successfully.
I am often recognized for my energy, hospitality, and ability to make people from all walks of life feel a genuine sense of belonging.
What sets me apart is not just what I do, but how I do it. I am graced to reach people through the pulpit of faith and the platform of education, using both as opportunities to inspire, uplift, and equip others for their purpose.
How do you define success?
I define success as multiplied impact—the ability to influence one person in a way that inspires them to do the same for others. True success isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about creating exponential growth, where transformation extends beyond me and continues to ripple outward.
