Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Paintings.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My paintings are reflections of my decision to choose life over death.
If you work hard and believe in yourself, the universe will nudge you in the direction of your dreams. I am living proof, residing in the Caribbean, creating paintings in paradise. Gauguin and Pissarro are the artists who influenced this desire to become an artist in the tropics. My latest series includes impressionist landscapes from the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Barbados.
The Secret hides in plain sight. Communication comes from the Earth’s underlying current, reverberates within our souls, and enters consciousness through emotion. All art forms have the capacity to reveal this phenomenon.
My paintings begin by recording the visual world. As they evolve, a hidden story emerges. While marks are made, faces arise from the brushstrokes. Eyes appear as lights in darkness, particles in space, and windows on walls. Features are exaggerated and the narrative is launched through the title.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have been betrayed by the ones I loved the most. Depression has affected me throughout my entire life. Producing art has been the one thing to save me.
We cannot control the actions of others, but we can control whether or not to be destroyed by them. Fixing the broken fragments of ourselves is extremely difficult and comes with overwhelming despair. Constant creation makes it possible to grow instead of wither. Our brokenness does not define our destiny.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create small works on paper, large works on canvas, and public art using acrylics, watercolors, ink, graphite, charcoal, and gold leaf. Most of my paintings begin en plein air and are completed at the studio.
I most recently painted a piano outside the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts, for The City of Raleigh’s Complex Piano Project.
All images on the instrument are reproductions of my earlier paintings of the said center, the North Carolina State Capitol, Christ Church, First Baptist Church, St. Augustine’s University, and Shaw University.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Raleigh has been especially instrumental in the formation of my artistic existence. My teacher at Cardinal Gibbons High School, Rebecca Dason, was the one to initially inspire my passion for painting.
The Visual Art Exchange (vaeraleigh.org) provided me with my first public art opportunities including gallery showings, art galas, street painting festivals, and business seminars.
I’ve made many connections and applied to countless art calls through Triangle Artworks (triangleartworks.org).
Terri Frohman (hmbcollective.com/services) is an art career therapist who has helped me develop essential success strategies.
