Reuben Sullins

Reuben, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
fitness has always been a huge part of my life. I’ve been an athlete since I was a kid, playing football and basketball competitively. I even had a shot at the pros after college, but unfortunately got sidelined with an injury during tryouts. The recovery was going to be long, and honestly, I didn’t want to be chasing that dream in my late 20s if it meant missing out on other opportunities. But that whole experience really ignited my passion for training. I loved the feeling of pushing myself and becoming stronger, and I realized I wanted to help others achieve their fitness goals too. My own trainer at the time really helped me see that potential in myself.
So, I jumped into the world of personal training, starting at New York Sports Club to gain some experience. It wasn’t the perfect fit, so I moved on to in-home training for a few years. That gave me the flexibility and freedom to really connect with clients on a personal level.
Eventually, I landed a gig at Equinox. Those three years were invaluable. I learned a ton, honed my skills, and built the confidence to finally go out on my own.
My first studio? A tiny office space! Talk about getting creative – I was literally tying resistance bands around the radiator because there wasn’t room for much else. I even rented space in a couple of other gyms, but it still wasn’t quite what I envisioned.
Then the pandemic hit. I took my training outdoors, and it was surprisingly successful. I actually gained a lot of clients during that time. And it was while leaving an in-home session that I stumbled upon the perfect studio space. It was fate!
With my own space, I decided to really lean into my athletic background. I wanted to train athletes, and it felt like a natural transition. I pursued more specialized certifications, including one with Overtime Athletes, which has been a game-changer for my career.
Now, I’m focused on helping people of all ages reach their athletic potential. It’s incredibly rewarding to see my clients achieve their goals and push their limits. This is what I was meant to do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting out as a personal trainer One of the biggest hurdles I faced was the financial uncertainty. Building a solid client base takes time, and in the beginning, that monthly rent payment was rough. I never wanted to take out a loan, so I hustled and always believed I’d find a way to make ends meet. It wasn’t easy, but that struggle made me stronger and more determined. Renting space from other gyms was sometimes more stressful than it should have been. Dealing with a lack of transparency and different personalities definitely threw some curveballs my way.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Fitness Coach -design personal programs for specific needs (weight loss, muscle gain, endurance, sports specific)

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Im looking to design my own program that satisfies all needs and one day open up my own gym with fitness coaches as my team.
