Check Out Story Charlemagne’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Story Charlemagne.

Hi Story, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I go by Story Charlemagne, and I am an artist here in the Raleigh Triangle area. My journey has taken me from hanging out in my living room with a guitar to opening up for artists like Abraham Alexander and continuing opportunities to share my music for a living.

I performed as much as possible for years after leaving college back in Upstate New York. After we made a decision to move from NY to NC in 2020, life has been full of change in scenery and vocation. Not until the summer of 2022 did I decide to try to support myself with music alone.

Although the idea of supporting myself with music is dreamworthy, the process requires a whole other skill set and discipline that I continue to hone as I am blessed with opportunities to perform. It has afforded me the time to work on my original love of creating music.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Growing up with parents who sacrificed a lot to better my upbringing, I struggle to justify music sometimes. My current album seeks to address this feeling I have had for a decade.

I did not make any money from music for the first 19 years I have been plucking away at my guitar. For nearly 7 years, I often paid to perform at open mics and/or rented venues to put on original music shows. Back in NY, I spent a lot of resources and time to travel to a studio space we rented in Queens, NY. It was a small room, stained with cigarette smoke from the multiple restaurants that shared a back hall. We loved every second of being there.

May 2020, my girlfriend and I moved from NY to NC. I may be glazing over a lot of change, COVID, etc. A few vocal injuries and months of rest later, and I found myself with the opportunity to entertain again. I am sure I have skipped A LOT, yet I believe most adversity I have had is overshadowed by the kindness I have come across.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an original artist with a goal to make people think of genres in a less static way. I love many genres of music, and I try to blend a soulful voice, acoustic guitar, and rhythm in a way that makes me want to move.

My goal is to create a concept with each project as the world around me continues to evolve. I love telling stories with music, and the idea of concept albums. I enjoy being able to speak on a topic that may not reflect my life directly yet have my own respectful perspective.

I am most proud of my project I am currently completing called SUM Therapy. This was supposed to be a test bed for me to continue learning production. It feels like a milestone to complete something, and I have arrived!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success for me to find a pocket of the world that I can share space with. I love music just as much as I love to perform, and after spending most of my musical experience alone for the most part, I crave working with others and sharing stories.
