Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy McKinley.
Hi Tracy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a working mom and a proud Johnston County native with a lifelong passion for writing. My love of storytelling began in grade school through poetry, where I received the Golden Poet Award and an Honorable Mention. By the time I reached high school, several of my poems had been published.
Although I loved writing poetry, my dream was always to become a children’s book author. I am grateful to have made that dream a reality through my Orville series. My first book celebrates the importance of embracing our differences, while my second book explores the difficult topic of bullying and encourages children to choose kindness, courage, and friendship.
These stories are deeply personal to me. I was born with a cleft lip, and growing up I often felt different and experienced bullying firsthand. Those challenges shaped my heart and inspired me to write books that remind children they are never defined by their differences. Instead, those differences are what make each of us unique and special.
My greatest hope is that every child who reads my books will gain confidence, embrace who they are, and know they are loved, valued, and capable of making a positive difference in the lives of others.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Challenges are reaching my audience and marketing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
In December 2022, I self-published my first children’s book, Orville Finds Friendship. Through Orville’s story, I wanted to show children that true friendship isn’t defined by our differences and that everyone deserves kindness and acceptance.
In December 2025, I released the second book in the series, Orville Goes to the Fair. This heartwarming story helps children understand how to respond to bullying with courage, kindness, and confidence while encouraging them to stand up for themselves and others.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Marketing is an important part of my strategic plan, as it allows me to reach more children and families with my books. My ultimate goal is to make a positive difference in children’s lives by encouraging kindness, celebrating differences, and inspiring the confidence to stand up to bullying.
