Community Highlights: Meet Amanda Massey of Elite Motion & Performance Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Massey.

Hi Amanda, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was a child, my family bought property in North East Texas with dreams of starting a cattle/horse ranch operation. That first summer spent at the ranch, I was in a terrible horse riding accident that fractured my femur and confined me to a wheelchair for three months. The recovery process was daunting. Even today, thirty years later, my hip mobility compensates for how my body healed. Many years later I suffered another terrible injury to my back after falling off a polo prospect. This was when I was introduced to chiropractic as a holistic and healing profession that changed my life and allowed me to be able to ride horses and live an active lifestyle.

I became a chiropractor because I wanted to help people like me; active people who have overcome trauma and want to recover from sports injuries to get back to doing the things that they love to do. I am also an animal lover and have a passion for helping animals who have sustained injuries, which is why I went on to learn animal chiropractic and become certified through the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association.

I have spent the last ten years in my own practice based out of Austin, TX taking care of people and their pets with holistic chiropractic care. I recently moved to the Raleigh area with my horses because the love of my life and his children are here and I want to start another business here. Elite Motion & Performance Chiropractic is a unique, holistic, concierge style practice focused on recovering fully from injuries and preventing future injuries for people and their pets. I start with a thorough examination to identify the root cause of the problem and what additional areas are compensating because of the imbalance, restriction or instability. Then a comprehensive and unique treatment plan is constructed for each individual patient which includes chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release, therapeutic exercises and lifestyle modifications. I am passionate about empowering people to heal and to achieve winning results with their pets to improve their quality of life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Any business owner that has been in business for ten years has experienced a bumpy road. Like all businesses, there are ups and downs and waves that we ride along the way. Starting my practice in Austin Texas will have different challenges than starting a practice in Raleigh, North Carolina. Being an animal chiropractor has many challenges as a pioneer in a relatively undefined field. Being a woman in a predominantly male dominated profession is actually more of an asset than a challenge because I find people prefer to see an intuitive, empathetic, and nurturing healthcare provider during their most vulnerable moments.

Weathering the economic shifts and learning how to solve problems for clients is the best way to pivot and capitalize during times of struggle. For example, during the pandemic I transitioned my office from multiple locations all over the city to one location on a property that was outside of downtown Austin and had a larger indoor and outdoor space to safely see patients human and animal. This allowed for expansion and scaling at a reasonable rate while still providing excellent patient care. Recently, I fractured my hand which left me unable to work for a month while I recovered. As a self employed individual in a new state, the timing could not have been worse, or was it the best time? Perspective is all about how you perceive your environment around you and what you do with that information dictates the outcome.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Elite Motion & Performance Chiropractic is a mobile chiropractic business for people and their pets in the Triangle and Sandhills area of North Carolina. I am also licensed in Texas and travel seasonally for equestrian clients. Currently, I am the only doctor in the practice and I offer a variety of services for people and their pets. I went to Parker University for chiropractic school which teaches a diverse selection of techniques so that I can adjust my patients with a customized approach that works best with their body to optimize recovery and performance. The AVCA course which certifies veterinarians and chiropractors to safely perform animal chiropractic is also offered at Parker University, which is why I chose that school to go to for my doctoral education.

What sets me apart from other animal chiropractors is that I use fascia distortion model incorporated into my treatment sessions to help the body hold the adjustments longer so patients need less treatment than what is traditionally recommended. I am a lifelong equestrian that has competed in multiple disciplines throughout my adult life and am continuing to learn and expand my knowledge on the subject. This helps me understand on a personal level what it takes to win and how to overcome injuries/setbacks as an athlete. I am also passionate about sustainable farming and functional nutrition and how this plays an integral part in preventing and recovering from injuries as an athlete. Elite Motion & Performance Chiropractic offers high quality, concierge care for patients, human and animal alike using current treatment methods to optimize healing and recovery time so patients can get back to enjoying their active lives.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Getting involved and serving within the community to build relationships with like minded business owners and entrepreneurs has proven to be the best way for me to attract my ideal customers. As a primarily equine and equestrian chiropractor, my niche is very specific, so I am passionate about learning from other equine professionals, and healthcare professionals to learn the latest updates and information in the field to stay current and up to date.

The best advice I can give to other business owners is
1. Become what you want to attract to you.
2. Put yourself in places where your ideal clients enjoy spending their time.
3. Build referral relationships with the golden geese in your field.
4. READ BOOKS and listen to podcasts to stay up to date on current information in your field.
5. Never stop growing and doing things to develop yourself personally and keep the fire burning. This will reflect itself in your business.
