Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Bangale.
Hi Anita, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, to my parents, who had immigrated to the United States from India in the late 70s. They came to this country with only a few dollars in their hands, but they had hearts filled with hope and a mind loaded with grit and resilience. Growing up, hard work served as the mantra of each day. I studied hard, graduated from high school as valedictorian, completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology, and then finished medical school at the top of my class. I then served as chief resident at the end of my residency in emergency medicine. Academics was the key to success and therefore, happiness I was told.
During my entire academic process, I saw so many colleagues who inspired me to keep working harder – pursuing more projects and collecting more awards along the way. But what was the end point? When would that chase for more end? I started to see many colleagues feeling intense academic pressure along the road to high achievement. So many high achievers continued to satisfy other people’s expectations because they felt they “had to” – that was what other people expected them to do. I began to wonder how many people were actually happy in their day-to-day life – making decisions to make their own dreams come true instead of someone else’s.
My perspective truly changed in my first year as an attending physician—when I became a mother. This new role completely revolutionalized my life as I realized that my purpose went beyond “shiny object syndrome” in academics. I struggled to balance overnight shifts and a full-time workload while trying to maximize time with my daughter. We then moved to Texas, and I served as medical director of my emergency department for a few years and then gave birth to my second daughter. This amplified the need for me to create more balance in life. I wanted to continue working full-time as I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of my shifts in the ER. At the same time, however, I started to see more and more “successful” people (who were senior to me) complaining about the stress. Many seemed to be going through the motions in their work and home life—they seemed to yearn to find a deeper purpose.
By the time I had my third daughter, I was approached by a national telemedicine company. I continued working full-time in the ER and started working in telemedicine to help treat patients struggling with symptoms of anxiety and depression. I realized that many young people between 18 and 35 struggled with feelings brought on by toxic social comparisons – they felt distracted and inferior—with low self-worth and self-esteem.
I began making a realization—no matter how academically successful people ranked and regardless of profession or age, this internal feeling of “being stuck” was all too common in our modern, achievement-based society. People were living lives to satisfy other people’s requirements. I decided to pursue my life coaching certification during the covid pandemic, and this is how I began working with teens, moms, and physicians to help guide them to create a life filled with choice and purpose. My passion is to empower people with confidence, so they feel fully equipped to create the life of their dreams.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It certainly has been a road filled with ups and downs. I am privileged that I came from a background where education was highly valued. Growing up, if there were books that I needed, my parents made that a priority. My internal struggle, however, was that I felt like I “fit into” two different worlds, without truly belonging to either. I felt this yin and yang struggle culturally – being very proud of my Indian heritage while trying to be American enough at school; and vice versa at home with my family growing up. Similarly, I had certain expectations of what I should do as a mother and as an emergency medicine physician. Sometimes I felt like I had to be the perfect doctor at work and mother at home. No one had stated that I had to be those things, yet it was an unrealistic expectation based on my perception of what a great job other people were doing in these separate arenas. If my children were sick, I had to make it work out at home so I could still go to all my shifts. But then, amongst my friends who did not work, I felt like I was being judged for missing volunteer activities and school meetings- feeling as if I was not prioritizing my children enough. So I was caught in this tug-of-war between my dual roles.
I also struggled in my decision to leave hospital-based emergency medicine and practice in a free-standing ER. Again, most of this was based on what I thought other people would think about my choices instead of how I myself felt about these changes.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At Diya Coaching, I infuse clients with so much confidence that they can’t hold themselves back from choosing and creating the life of their dreams. I believe we each have a Diya or bright light that shines from within. My goal at Diya is to help you ignite your light. I see so many people struggling with the toxic effects of social comparison and living in fear of judgment and what other people think. I want to help people undo the toxic effect of how we perceive society’s expectations of us. By doing so, people can learn to say “yes” to themselves and “no” to obligations. I work with students, moms, and physicians, looking to maximize productivity, reduce stress, and create joy in their life using a proven, encouraging approach. I believe coaching is essentially a truth-seeking conversation. I serve as a guide, helping you navigate your journey to maximizing joy and creating an amazing life – as you define it. My goal is to help unlock the best version of yourself so you can live a life full of confidence, authenticity, and purpose. I do this by building trust and understanding and serving as a reflection mirror for you to discover your own core beliefs. By asking powerful and curious questions, we move forward and create change. It’s a process, and it works.
I break down our process into 3 big steps:
1) AWARENESS OF LIMITING BELIEFS
I like to first focus on understanding how you view yourself and the world around you. During the first few sessions, coaching will help you see which limiting beliefs are blocking you from achieving your goals. Once we have helped identify the patterns that are restricting you, we can then work on achieving the goals you have identified. I seek the truth in each client because that is what fuels growth and creativity.
2) REFLECTION TO OVERCOME THE BELIEFS
In the next sessions, I will work with you to develop patterns to help you overcome these beliefs and achieve breakthroughs. These patterns will become regular habits you can use for the rest of your life.
3) REINFORCE PATTERNS TO ACHIEVE GOALS
The rest of our sessions will focus on reinforcing your new patterns and using them to achieve the goals you outlined at our program’s beginning. By the end of our time together, you will gain the resources you are seeking to perform at your best! As you achieve goals, I will help celebrate your successes and think about your next level of achievements.
I want people to become so confident that they don’t hold themselves back. I am a board-certified physician with unique psychology, medicine, and coaching background. With over 15 years of experience as a physician, along with my life-coaching certification, I have helped hundreds of clients design a life filled with joy and success. I would love to work with individuals looking to evolve into their best self by using my signature methodology and evidence-based approach. I guide you on your journey towards remodeling your habits and energy so you can thrive confidently. My goal as your coach is to support you by asking challenging questions and encouraging you to push outside your comfort zone with compassion. Our program begins with a complimentary 30-minute session where you identify barriers and outline focused goals. Then, we worked together on the next steps. My mission is to empower my clients to live their most authentic life – full of confidence, passion, and purpose. At the end of our sessions, you will leave feeling motivated, energized, and equipped to create the world of your dreams.
We’re always looking for lessons that we can learn in any situation. Including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I saw an overwhelming number of patients and colleagues in medicine dealing with burnout and stress. I wanted to still help people in emergent situations but also to provide compassion and time to clients, which was sometimes missing in care delivered in the ER setting. I leaned into my background in Psychology and came full circle – combining my love for people and compassionate communication. I formally pursued my coaching certification and opened up Diya Coaching during the crisis.
