Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayesha Moore
Hi Ayesha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always enjoyed working with children. When I was in grade school, I tutored children in younger grades and I coached a pop warner cheerleading team. When I was in undergrad, I tutored at an elementary school and taught Spanish to the children in the school’s child development lab. Before going back to school, I volunteered at a children’s museum. While I was in graduate school, I volunteered at the local children’s hospital and as a guardian ad litem. I also taught child development at the university level. My years of studies, community involvement, previous work in child-based settings and the love I have working with children led me to starting my own business, Major Minors.
B.A. in Psychology with a minor in child development and family relations from East Carolina University
B.A. in Spanish from North Carolina Central University
M.S. in Human Development and Family Science – Child Life emphasis from East Carolina University
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business is not easy. It takes a lot of courage and self-motivation. I could have easily thrown in the towel when no one showed up to the first event (except 3 of my friends who came for support – love yall). I could have walked away when a bank teller laughed in my face when I asked to open a bank account or when property management groups refused to show me available rental spaces. Instead, I took a deep breath, prayed about it, and kept pushing. As the saying goes, “a smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.” Learn. Adjust. Grow.
As you know, we’re big fans of Major Minors. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Major Minors focus is learning through play. We offer a variety of activities to foster positive child development. Children can learn Spanish, practice math skills, explore different sports, and make friends along the way. We offer day camp throughout the year. We also host events such as Kickball for Kids and Major Minors on the Block. Something that sets us apart from others is our emphasis on play. Studies show people retain information more if they can actively apply what they are learning, and that’s exactly what we do. The use of evidence-based practices produces favorable, successful results.
We understand that children are part of a family, and families need flexibility. We offer drop in sessions, which allows us to work with your schedule. Our day camp is 7am – 6pm, which allows parents to get to and from work. Though we will recommend sessions based on grade and skill level, we allow parents to decide which level is best for their child. Children are able to explore their abilities without being locked into month or year long contracts. We take pride in being a valuable resource for families as well as a playful space for children.
There will be more fun to come as we continue to grow!
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
“Just keep swimming” as never meant so much to me as it does now. I’ve learned not everything is going to work as I envisioned or planned. Sometimes, I may have to step back and adjust in order to grow, and that’s okay. As long as I keep God first and continue to believe in myself, I know my vision will come to light. I have to “just keep swimming.”
