Community Highlights: Meet Bethany Melton of B. Bodied Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Melton.

Hi Bethany, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a plus-sized woman my entire life, and for as long as I can remember, I’ve struggled with confidence and self-image. Like many women, I’ve spent years trying to lose weight, improve my health, and feel more comfortable in my own skin. Along that journey, I found myself exploring different fitness, nutrition, and wellness communities in search of support, guidance, and a sense of belonging.

What I often found was that many wellness spaces were heavily focused on transformation. Success was usually measured by how much weight someone lost, how dramatically their appearance changed, or how quickly they reached a goal. While I understand why those stories are celebrated, I sometimes found myself wishing there was more room for people who were still in the middle of the journey: people who were showing up, making healthier choices, building confidence, and learning to care for themselves long before a dramatic transformation ever happened. I wanted wellness to feel accessible to people throughout the process, not just after they had reached the finish line.

At some point during my own journey, I discovered body sculpting as a client. At first, I was drawn to the aesthetic side of it; but as I learned more, my curiosity grew. I found myself wanting to understand what was happening beneath the surface and why certain techniques worked. As I dove deeper into the industry, I noticed many of the same patterns I had seen elsewhere: most of the attention was focused on the final result rather than the journey that got someone there. I also noticed a common misconception that body sculpting was only for people who were already relatively small or close to their goal weight. Too often, larger-bodied individuals were treated as though they should focus exclusively on weight loss before investing in other aspects of their wellness; and that never sat right with me. I believe people deserve access to services that help them feel confident, cared for, and connected to their bodies at every stage of their journey. Wellness is sometimes treated like something people earn after they lose the weight, reach the goal, or achieve the transformation; and I’ve always believed it should be part of the journey itself.

That realization played a major role in shaping what is now my vision for B. Bodied Wellness: I wanted to create a space where women could feel seen, supported, and educated on their journey, regardless of where they were starting. A space where someone could invest in themselves today, not someday. A space where wellness wasn’t reserved for people who already looked the part.

A few years later, I made the decision to attend massage therapy school. I went in with one goal in mind: learning post-operative care so I could better support clients recovering from cosmetic procedures. I expected to gain a new skill set that would complement the work I was already doing, but what I didn’t expect was for the experience to completely change the way I viewed the body.

One of the numerous lessons massage therapy taught me was that many of the goals people have for their bodies are influenced by much more than body fat or appearance alone. I started noticing how posture, movement patterns, chronic tension, mobility restrictions, and even stress could influence how someone looked, felt, and carried themselves. It made me realize that what people see in the mirror is often connected to much more than a number on a scale. Sometimes a person isn’t struggling because they need another diet or another workout plan, but because they need a better understanding of their body and the support to work with it rather than against it.

That shift in perspective changed the direction of my business and my career. What started as an interest in aesthetics evolved into a much deeper appreciation for movement, recovery, body awareness, and overall wellness. Today, B. Bodied Wellness combines body sculpting, massage therapy, and wellness-focused bodywork into a personalized experience designed to help clients look, feel, and move better.

Looking back, I think that’s why this work means so much to me. For years, I was searching for the kind of wellness space that valued people for where they were rather than where they were trying to go; and in many ways, B. Bodied Wellness became my opportunity to create that space. What started as one of my greatest insecurities eventually became one of my greatest blessings. Today, I have the privilege of working with women who share many of the same challenges I continue to navigate myself and helping them see that they don’t have to wait until they reach a goal weight, clothing size, or milestone to start caring for themselves. In many ways, we grow together. I often find myself encouraging my clients in ways I need to be encouraged, reminding them, and myself, that growth isn’t always linear, that confidence isn’t reserved for a future version of ourselves, and that we are worthy of care right now. If anything, this business has become a way of giving the younger version of myself exactly what she needed: support, education, and permission to feel worthy throughout the journey, not just at the finish line.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road; but looking back, many of the challenges ended up shaping the business into what it is today.

One of the biggest struggles has been balancing life with my growth and education. While building B. Bodied Wellness, I was also working, tutoring, attending massage therapy school, and investing heavily in my own development. There were plenty of times when I felt stretched thin, questioning whether I was doing enough or moving quickly enough.

Another challenge was realizing that the more I learned, the more my vision for the business evolved. What started as a body sculpting business gradually became something much bigger; because as I gained more education and experience, I found myself wanting more out of my practice. The deeper I dove into understanding the body, the more I realized there was so much more to the story than before-and-after photos. I became fascinated by how bodywork could support circulation, movement, recovery, stress management, and overall well-being. While aesthetics will always be a part of what I do, I wanted to build a business that focused on helping people feel better in their bodies, not just look different in them. That shift in perspective required me to rethink services, messaging, the very roots of my brand, and even how I define success. In many ways, I feel like I’ve grown alongside the business.

Perhaps the most surprising challenge has been realizing that entrepreneurship doesn’t magically eliminate your own insecurities. I spend a lot of my time encouraging clients to believe in themselves, trust the process, and recognize their progress, and sometimes I have to remind myself of those same things. Building a business has required just as much personal growth as professional growth.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that growth rarely happens in a straight line; but the setbacks, pivots, and unexpected detours have often taught me more than the successes ever could.

We’ve been impressed with B. Bodied Wellness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
B. Bodied Wellness is a wellness-focused bodywork practice rooted in the belief that people deserve support, education, and care throughout their journey, not just after they reach a goal. Everything we do is grounded in science and guided by intention, which has become both my tagline and the philosophy behind the brand.

While I offer body sculpting, massage therapy, and wellness-focused bodywork services, what sets B. Bodied Wellness apart is the emphasis on understanding the “why.” My background as a tutor has had a huge influence on the way I work with clients. I’ve always been naturally curious and passionate about helping people understand things for themselves, so education is woven into nearly every interaction I have. I don’t just want clients to receive a service. I want them to leave with a better understanding of their bodies and the factors that influence how they look, feel, and function.

One thing that makes the brand especially personal to me is the name itself. B. Bodied Wellness is often shortened to BBW; and while those are simply the initials of the business, I would be lying if I said there wasn’t a deeper meaning behind it. In many ways, the women I most want to serve are the women who remind me of myself: women who are working on their health, confidence, and wellness but don’t always see themselves reflected in the industry. Creating a space where those women feel welcome, seen, and supported is something I’m incredibly proud of.

More than anything, I want readers to know that B. Bodied Wellness is about meeting people where they are. Whether someone walks through my door seeking relaxation, recovery, body confidence, or simply a better connection with themselves, my goal is to provide an experience that feels thoughtful, personalized, and empowering. If I’ve learned anything through my own journey, it’s that wellness isn’t a destination you arrive at one day. It’s a relationship you build with yourself over time… and everyone deserves the opportunity to start exactly where they are.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is spending time at my grandparents’ businesses. My grandfather owned a small convenience store in downtown Greensboro, and on days when I was out of school, I would often spend time there helping him. I remember riding along with him as he stocked inventory, watching him work the old cash register, assisting him with bagging groceries, and of course snacking on his merchandise every now and then. My favorite snack was always a chocolate MoonPie and a Sprite, and I remember losing a baby tooth while snacking on one once.

My grandmother was also an entrepreneur. She ran a hair salon from her home and had incredibly loyal clients who adored her. She would often do my hair growing up, and some of my favorite memories were sitting in her chair while she flat-ironed my hair for special occasions, a dance recital or Easter Sunday perhaps.

My “when I grow up” dream was always to become a doctor, a dream that my grandparents had become excited about as well. But when my path began to take a different route, I spent years questioning whether I had taken the right path and wondering if I was living up to the expectations I had placed on myself. It wasn’t until I became a business owner myself that I realized something that moved me to tears: I had been following in my grandparents’ footsteps all along. Their businesses taught me the value of relationships, service, community, and hard work long before I was old enough to appreciate it.

Looking back now, those memories mean so much more to me than they did at the time. What I once saw as simple afternoons spent with my grandparents, I now recognize as some of my earliest lessons in entrepreneurship. I think both of them would be immensely proud of where I am today, with or without the white coat.
