Community Highlights: Meet Desire’ Shropshire of Shropshire Legacy Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desire’ Shropshire.

Desire’ Shropshire

Hi Desire,’ we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always allowed my curiosity to lead me to specific opportunities, but my journey was challenging. Being a young mom, I felt I owed so much to myself. I continued to push through, working at a call center that only paid $9 an hour. I knew there was more for me. I finally had an opportunity in 2013 to attend Coastal Carolina Community College, where I took on the Paralegal technology program. I chose that program because I was a victim of the criminal system by simply being associated with the wrong person, and I wanted to understand the law and how I could have possibly prevented what had happened to me. During that time, my mind was transformed, and I could partner with community leaders and give back to others worse off than me. In 2015, I graduated, earning my associates in paralegal technology. Unfortunately, the small law firm I worked for laid me off, and that is then when I decided to start a new life in Charlotte, NC. I wanted to stay connected to law, so I got my Notary Certificate. I worked a few jobs here and there, but in 2017, I decided to start my first business offering loan signing and notary services. I was incredibly proud and never thought I would be a business owner. I also earned my bachelor’s in business management at Johnson C Smith.

Moving forward, I got back into the legal field and worked as an employment law paralegal at a Fortune 500 company. However, I knew it was time for me to go when my manager at the time slid me a paper with a 25-cent raise, and when I asked if I would ever be able to get more, she said, “It would take an act of God” June 2021 I put in my 2-week notice and never looked back. I graduated in December 2021, earning my bachelor’s in Business Management. I maintained my small business, but I needed more. I did research and decided to get licensed as a life insurance agent. I studied hard and finally obtained my license on December 22, 2022. I wrote my first policy on January 7, 2023. Things went fast for me. I stayed coachable and open-minded and was a top-ten producer at the agency I was part of for 2023. I still am a full-time life insurance broker, and I hire others who aspire to be independent agents like myself. It was the best decision I’ve ever made!

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, but the lessons I have learned have been invaluable. As mentioned, I was a young mom with my daughter at 18. Her dad was heavily involved in selling drugs, which in turn caused the DEA to build a case against me for being associated. I ended up getting locked up, and I had to do one year of probation. Whenever I met my probation officer, she would look me in the eye and say I know that’s not who you are. I have to do my job. However, in 2011, my charges were dismissed, and my attorney told me I was eligible for expungement, meaning my record would be wiped clean! In 2012, I was finally free with no record, and that is when I hit the gas and took off. I was involved with as many community programs as possible; I was the VP for the Paralegal Society at the community college I attended and volunteered at the domestic violence shelter for women and children. I was so grateful for overcoming everything I had gone through that I had to give back. From a business perspective, I had to make a lot of sacrifices to be a business owner. I sacrificed thousands of dollars, my time, and many days of crying, wondering if I was making the right choice. But God spoke to me and said I was doing everything I was supposed to, so it’s all been worth it.
