Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Jolley.

Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m the owner of Triangle Health Advisors, an independent health insurance brokerage based in Durham, North Carolina. I primarily help individuals and families under 65 navigate health insurance, especially people who are self-employed or going through major life transitions like leaving a job, turning 26, moving, or losing coverage unexpectedly.

Like many people in this industry, I didn’t grow up thinking I’d work in health insurance. What drew me to it was realizing how overwhelming and confusing the process can feel for most people, especially during already stressful moments in their lives. I found that I genuinely enjoyed helping people understand their options, simplifying complicated information, and being a steady resource for them. I’m a former preschool teacher, so I have a very education driven approach.

Over time, I realized I wanted to build a business that felt more personal, approachable, and relationship-driven. I started Triangle Health Advisors with the goal of creating a client experience where people felt supported instead of pressured and educated instead of overwhelmed.

Today, most of my business comes from referrals and long-term client relationships, which means a lot to me. I love being able to help clients not only enroll in coverage, but also navigate the real-life questions that come up afterward. Building trust and helping people feel confident in their decisions has been the most rewarding part of this journey.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Health insurance is an industry that’s constantly changing, and there’s a steep learning curve — not just with the plans themselves, but with regulations, carrier systems, compliance, and learning how to run a business at the same time.

One of the biggest challenges has been building trust in an industry where many people already feel skeptical or overwhelmed. A lot of clients come to me frustrated from past experiences or confused by conflicting information they’ve found online, so earning that trust and helping people feel genuinely supported takes time and consistency.

There have also been the normal challenges that come with entrepreneurship — wearing every hat in the business, learning systems and processes, balancing growth with providing a high level of personal service, and navigating uncertainty during major industry changes.

At the same time, those challenges have helped shape the business into what it is today. They’ve pushed me to become more organized, more empathetic, and more focused on creating a client experience that feels calm, personal, and trustworthy. Looking back, I think the difficult parts have actually reinforced why this work matters to me.

I own Triangle Health Advisors, an independent health insurance brokerage based in Durham that helps individuals, families, and small business owners navigate health insurance with more clarity and confidence.

I primarily specialize in under-65 health insurance, including ACA Marketplace plans, coverage for self-employed individuals, early retirees, and people going through major life transitions like losing employer coverage, moving, getting divorced, or turning 26. I also help small businesses explore options for offering benefits to their employees.

What I’m probably most known for is taking something that feels incredibly confusing and making it approachable. Health insurance can feel intimidating, full of jargon, and emotionally stressful, especially when people are worried about cost or access to care. I focus heavily on education and relationship-building so clients feel informed instead of pressured.

Because I’m an independent broker, I’m able to focus on finding the best fit for each client’s needs and budget rather than pushing one specific carrier or product. I also stay involved long after enrollment — helping clients troubleshoot issues, understand how to actually use their coverage, and navigate changes throughout the year.

I think what truly sets the business apart is the level of personal support and accessibility I provide. Many of my clients come from referrals, which means a lot to me because it reflects the trust people place in me during some of the more uncertain moments in their lives.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that Triangle Health Advisors has grown primarily through relationships and word-of-mouth. I’ve worked hard to create a business that feels approachable, responsive, and genuinely helpful rather than transactional. I want readers to know that health insurance doesn’t have to feel overwhelming, and that having a knowledgeable advocate in your corner can make a huge difference.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’ve found that one of the most valuable resources in both my business and personal growth has been surrounding myself with other business owners and strong professional communities. Networking has played a huge role in how I’ve built my business, especially as someone whose work is so relationship-driven.

I’m heavily involved with BNI, and that community has been incredibly impactful for me. It’s helped me grow not just through referrals, but through mentorship, accountability, collaboration, and learning from other entrepreneurs. Being connected to people who genuinely believe in relationship-building and supporting one another has shaped how I approach my business.
