Community Highlights: Meet Emily Wegmann of Carolina Pelvic Health Center

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drs. Emily Wegmann and Sarah Talley, physical therapists. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Emily Wegmann

Sarah and Emily first met in 2001 in Seattle, Washington, early in our careers as pelvic physical therapists. A decade later, our paths crossed again in Raleigh, North Carolina, when we were able to work together and reconnect as friends. We soon discovered that we shared the common dream of owning a practice that would allow us to treat our patients with the latest evidence-based techniques in a comfortable and healing environment. Carolina Pelvic Health Center, Inc. is the result of our shared vision to create a premier physical therapy practice specializing in the treatment of female and male pelvic health. Our philosophy is to treat the whole person by identifying and treating the underlying structural and functional movement imbalances that are the root source of the problem. We have been serving our local community for over 10 years and have expanded to include another therapist, Dr. Kristin Phillips, in our practice. She brings her expertise in pelvic health and teaching and is a clinical specialist in women’s health. We all look forward to many more years of helping folks overcome their pelvic floor problems and orthopedic conditions to live their best lives!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We opened Carolina Pelvic Health Center, Inc. in 2012, after the great recession. The economy was slowly recovering, and we were a new cash practice. Very few people thought we’d succeed in that environment. During that time, the Affordable Care Act was in full swing, bringing with it sweeping changes in healthcare practice and delivery. We proved folks wrong, excelled, and grew during our first 5 years of business. We added another therapist and a massage therapist to our clinic. We weathered the pandemic despite closing our clinic for over 2 months. Telehealth and the use of good practices to provide a safe and healing environment allowed us to continue providing care to our patients during unprecedented times. We could not have been successful without a dynamic and supportive administrative team. We contribute our success and growth to working as a team to provide excellent customer service. Because of our teamwork, we were able to grow again when Dr. Phillips moved to NC from WV to work with us and is now a full-time therapist. A small business is always susceptible to changes in the economy, but we have proven that we are dynamic and able to pivot to rise to the challenges to continue to provide excellent physical therapy care for our community.

We’ve been impressed with Carolina Pelvic Health Center, Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Carolina Pelvic Health Center, Inc. is a cash-based outpatient physical therapy clinic that focuses on orthopedic and pelvic floor dysfunctions. Our philosophy is to treat the whole person by identifying and treating the underlying structural and functional movement imbalances that are the root source of the problem. We believe in a collaborative model and work closely with area physicians and other allied health professionals to address the complex nature of our patient’s symptoms. We treat a variety of problems associated with the pelvic floor muscles. Common concerns include bladder and bowel dysfunctions, sexual health problems, and pelvic pain, pre- and postpartum-related injuries, hip, pelvic, and lower back pain, return to sport, and much more. Because of our practice model, we can spend one hour with our patients to provide one-on-one care that is patient-centered. We are proud to provide care of topics and concerns that are often very personal, embarrassing, and/or have involved trauma. We treat everyone with respect, kindness, and compassion from the first interaction on the phone to the care they receive in the clinic. We hope that everyone feels they have been heard and given the best care available.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Carolina Pelvic Health Center, Inc. has been successful due to our teamwork and collaboration as owners and clinicians. We have worked hard to solve problems together to create a business that is able to meet the changing demands of the healthcare environment as well as the world and economy we live in. Our ability to be creative in difficult times and pivot as needed to meet the challenges of the local and world situation has allowed our clinic to thrive. Collaborations with other physical therapists and local providers and treating our patients with the most current practices allow us to deliver quality care over the years and well into the future.
