Today we’d like to introduce you to Faylene Whitaker.
Hi Faylene, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My husband and I started the farm in 1975 as a tobacco farm on rented land. We bought the original 36 acres in the fall of that year, my husband is now deceased. Today I farm with my son, his wife and grandson. We farm 220 acres of organic tobacco, 40 acres of tomatoes, 100 acres of squash, 14 acres of strawberries and pumpkins, several acres of other produce. We grow vegetables in the greenhouse year round.
We also do agri-tourism, have 2 garden centers, a bakery , and offer landscaping.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There was many struggles, to start with was being a woman in agriculture when we first started. Weather has
been the biggest challenge farming, Loss of farmland to development is one of the most recent challenges.
Having a sufficient work force has always been a challenge.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Whitaker Farms LLC?
