Today we’d like to introduce you to Hope Anthony.
Hi Hope, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I began my journey in web development in 1997, at a time when e-commerce was still in its infancy. My first major project was building a custom website with over 2,500 products, complete with a payment gateway I developed myself to sell house and garden flags. I also expanded into online marketplaces like eBay, which gave me early, hands-on experience with digital sales, inventory management, and customer behavior long before those systems were widely standardized.
As my interest in e-commerce grew, I became an active contributor to the open-source community. One of my most impactful contributions was developing the Authorize.net SIM and AIM add-ons for osCommerce. These integrations were adopted worldwide and used by businesses across the globe until Authorize.net released its official solution. That experience helped solidify my expertise in scalable e-commerce systems and positioned me to work with clients nationwide.
I earned a Business Computer Programming degree from Wilson Community College, where I built a strong foundation in languages such as RPG, BASIC, COBOL, and C++. That formal education, combined with a deep love for programming, made it natural for me to become largely self-taught in full-stack web development. Over the years, I’ve learned to work comfortably across multiple languages, frameworks, and platforms, adapting as technology continues to evolve.
Throughout my career, I’ve designed and developed online stores using hand-coded solutions as well as platforms including osCommerce, OpenCart, WooCommerce, Shopify, Wix, and Squarespace. I’ve also built business and organizational websites using Joomla, WordPress, and Wix, tailoring each project to the client’s goals rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all approach.
In 2021, I further expanded my skill set by earning an Associate’s Degree in Information Security Systems, reinforcing my commitment to building secure, reliable digital experiences. Today, my work reflects more than two decades of hands-on development, problem-solving, and continuous learning — all driven by a passion for helping businesses grow through thoughtful, secure, and effective web solutions.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. When I first started, there were very few ready-made solutions, limited documentation, and no AI or automation to help solve problems. If something broke or didn’t exist, you had to figure it out from scratch — often through trial and error. That environment forced me to become resourceful, patient, and deeply analytical, but it also meant long hours and plenty of challenges.
Like most small businesses, there have also been natural ups and downs along the way. Technology evolves quickly, platforms change, and economic shifts can impact clients and projects in unexpected ways. Balancing growth, staying current with new tools, and continuing to deliver high-quality work during uncertain periods has required adaptability and resilience.
Those challenges, however, have shaped how I work today. They taught me the value of problem-solving, continuous learning, and building solutions that are not just functional but sustainable. Looking back, the struggles were just as important as the successes in getting me to where I am now.
As you know, we’re big fans of CloudnBugs. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business, CloudnBugs, is a web development and digital strategy company focused on helping small businesses, organizations, and entrepreneurs build secure, scalable, and effective online platforms. I specialize in custom website development, e-commerce solutions, and long-term website optimization, with a strong emphasis on performance, security, and usability.
What sets CloudnBugs apart is the depth of experience behind every project. With more than two decades in web development, I don’t approach websites as templates or quick builds — I approach them as systems. I work across platforms like WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify, and custom-coded solutions, and I help clients choose the right technology for their specific goals rather than forcing them into a one-size-fits-all platform.
Security is another key differentiator. With formal training in information security systems, I build websites with protection, stability, and longevity in mind. Clients often come to me after experiencing site failures, hacks, or performance issues, and I’m proud to be someone they trust to not only fix the problem but prevent it from happening again.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the reputation CloudnBugs has built for integrity, education, and reliability. I believe strongly in empowering clients to understand their websites, not just own them. Many of my client relationships span years, which speaks to the level of trust and partnership I aim to create.
I want readers to know that CloudnBugs isn’t just about building websites — it’s about helping businesses grow with confidence. Whether it’s launching an online store, rebuilding after a setback, or optimizing an existing site for better results, my goal is always to create solutions that work behind the scenes so clients can focus on what they do best.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My biggest advice for finding mentors and building a strong network is to focus on relationships, not transactions. Great customer service, honesty, and doing what you say you’ll do consistently matters more than any formal networking strategy. The strongest connections I’ve made over the years came from simply showing up, doing quality work, and treating people with respect.
Word-of-mouth referrals have been one of the most powerful drivers of my business. When clients trust you and feel supported, they naturally become advocates for your work. Those long-term client relationships often turn into mentorship opportunities, referrals, and meaningful professional connections without forcing the process.
What has worked best for me is staying genuine, listening more than talking, and always putting the client’s best interest first. Over time, that approach builds a network rooted in trust — and that kind of network lasts.
