Community Highlights: Meet Imery Dunn of Pyvot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imery Dunn.

Hi Imery, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a child always enjoyed doing hair, it was truly a creative outlet for me. And it’s funny listening to my grandmother share her memories of me in the back room of her house, styling hair on my mannequin head. My mom was the first person to teach me how to braid, and as I reflect on that moment, this is where my fascination for hair began. While attending North Carolina Central University, I made extra money on the side doing hair but still had no interest to pursue this a career. It wasn’t until my senior year of college, where I made the decision to go to cosmetology school upon graduating,

In 2017, I took a leap of faith and opened my own salon in Durham, NC. That was an amazing journey, full of great experiences that taught me a lot about myself, how to manage staff, and the skillset it took to run a business. At the end of 2019, I closed the doors to Imery Nicole Hair Studios, rebranded, and Pyvot was born. I’m currently located in Cary, NC specializing in natural hair care.

I enjoy showing up to work and creating an experience that’s fully catered to my clients. I love the benefits of providing a service, sharing our stories, and them leaving fully satisfied. It’s the greatest feeling in the world to know my skill set plays a part in how they view themselves.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
With any story, there’s definitely some texture; and who would we be without those “sandpaper” moments to help shape who we’ve become. As an entrepreneur, you face a lot of hurdles that test your grit and determination. And one of my hurdles was self-doubt. I always, and still do believe that I can do anything I put my mind to, but there were certain struggles I faced that solely relied on believing in myself. In spite of whatever challenge that came my way, I had to believe that I was worthy, that I could pull off any goal, no matter the size or how scary it was. That’s where the shift began to take place. If we don’t believe in ourselves, we get in our own way and we slow down our process. It impacts how you show up for your vision and your business. Knowing this, am I exempt from self-doubt? ABSOLUTELY NOT, I’m human. But I have a better understanding of who I am, in addition to implementing self-care routines that affirm my progress.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I enjoy creating experiences and making black women feel good, that’s my SUPERPOWER, and Pyvot is the platform to support that. I downsized to a salon suite after closing my salon Durham, NC, and it was one of my greatest decisions. It elevated the salon experience for myself and my clients.

Healthy hair is my specialty, but I’m also great with natural hair care. I’m most proud that my salon is retreat and safe place for my clients to fully be themselves. Many of us assume so many different roles that keep us busy, which is why I take pride in my clients being able to check in with themselves. And what better place than the hair salon! You’re able to have organic conversation, laugh, sip wine, all while being taken care of!

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory are the summers I spent with my dad at the barbershop. He was a barber and still cuts hair from time to time. Being immersed in that culture was unmatched and they paid me for sweeping up hair throughout the day! I was able to take a trip to my “father’s world” and experience what brought him joy. He’s actually was the one who gave me my first mannequin head.
