Today we’d like to introduce you to Jared Plummer
Hi Jared, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
We started in 2015 as a mobile truck and trailer out of a kitchen incubator. Since then we’ve added so many layers including 6 retail shops, concession stalls at Lenovo Center, Durham Bulls, and WakeMed Soccer Park and we have continued to expand our catering and mobile presence. We also have a central commissary where we make all the ice cream and host parties and classes. It’s been a fun journey from a one man show to a crew of 75 plus folks.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Most small businesses starting out are strapped for cash and when there is a very small team of folks doing everything, there can be the squeeze and stress of “doing more with less”. There are always setbacks like freezers losing power, vehicles breaking down, and extended periods of rough weather. Also, when a new store or location is opening you never know what revenues will be like so there’s a lot of “educated guesses” along the way.
We’ve been impressed with Two Roosters Ice Cream, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We make one thing and make it really well and that’s ice cream. Our customers know us for our inventive flavors, our playful but refined brand, and our community engagement efforts. We also like to have fun on social media. We’ve done so many collaborations over the years with local bakers, musicians, tattoo artists, professional athletes, and kid chefs to name a few. Our motto at Two Roosters is to use ice cream to make a bad day better and a good day great, so we hope that everyone that comes in contact with us will have those outcomes.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
There are always trendy things fro-yo, or rolled/cold table concepts, but hand dipped old fashion ice cream will always be a thing as long as the cows keep giving milk. There’s been a shift in demand for more local/handmade products so we feel like we are positioned well for that. I think as long as we keep innovating and being creative with our flavors there will always be a demand for what we are doing.
