Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Dew.
Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I developed a love for signs when I got my first job right out of college at a local sign company. I loved seeing how signs came to life—from the first sketches on paper to the finished product standing tall. All the behind-the-scenes details of sign making really drew me in. I have over 30 years of experience in sign design under my belt now. In 2016, I went through a divorce, and I now needed a way to support myself and my children. So, I started doing freelance design work for sign companies. I eventually grew it into a company and to do design work for sign companies across the United States and gradually expanded into the fabrication side of it. For me, it’s about creating signs or sign creations that do double duty—they spotlight your business while adding a touch of beauty to the neighborhood we all share. I strive to be big enough to deliver sign projects with excellence, but small enough to develop trusted partnerships with each and every client.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. When COVID hit, I had three clients at the time and I lost all my work for several months. That was very difficult. I had myself and one employee at the time. The silver lining in that cloud is that The Small Business Center here in Davidson County was issuing grant money to small companies through this difficult time to help with training or help with a particular need. I knew I could use something but just didn’t know what. I posed that question and my advisor suggested business coaching. So, my journey began of doing business coaching. It helped tremendously and I have grown my company to have served over 100 Sign Companies now with design nationwide and I now have three full time designers. I am still in coaching to this day.
Another struggle we have from time to time, is the slow periods where design really drops off and as a business owner who has to pay three employees including herself, it can be a little scary. We have managed to make it through each and every time and operate as a debt free business.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
JED Graphics is a graphic design boutique that specializes in signage nationwide, and we’ve proudly expanded into the fabrication side—bringing our high-quality signs to businesses across the local Triad area. Between myself and my team, we bring over 50 years of combined experience in the sign industry. That depth of knowledge sets us apart from traditional graphic designers or freelancers—because we don’t just design signs, we understand how to bring them to life with craftsmanship and precision.
At JED Graphics, we are passionate about excellence in every step of the process. Whether we’re designing or fabricating, our goal is always the same: to deliver a product that reflects our client’s vision and elevates their brand presence. Our tagline, “Expect More Than a Sign. Expect Excellence,” isn’t just a slogan—it’s our promise.
Over the past few years, our commitment to quality has earned us growing recognition and referrals from across the industry. I’m incredibly proud of what our brand stands for—strength, reputation, and longevity.
Our contribution to the local community goes far beyond signs—we help shape the visual identity of our area. From small businesses and schools to retail spaces and community projects, our work helps make the Triad look vibrant, professional, and full of life. We don’t just build signs—we build landmarks, inspire pride, and help our community stand out beautifully.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about Raleigh is the creative energy that flows through this city. There’s such a strong sense of innovation and artistry here — from the small businesses and local makers to the way people invest in their communities. It’s inspiring, especially for someone in the design industry. I also love how Raleigh balances city life with nature. You can have a full day of meetings downtown and then be walking a greenway or relaxing by a lake minutes later. And the people — that’s what really makes it special. There’s this genuine spirit of collaboration and community. Everyone wants to see each other succeed, and that’s something I truly value. Raleigh is growing fast, but it still has that southern charm and warmth that make it feel like home.
What I like least about Raleigh would probably be the traffic and construction — though I know that comes with growth. Sometimes it feels like there’s a new detour every week! I also think as the city expands, we need to be intentional about preserving the local feel — those unique small businesses and creative spaces that give Raleigh its personality. But honestly, even with those challenges, I wouldn’t trade it. It’s exciting to be part of a city that’s evolving and full of opportunity.
