Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Woodall.
Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Pictures mean everything to me because I know how quickly life can change.
In 2015, my grandmother, my best friend, biggest cheerleader, and the cornerstone of our family, was diagnosed with brain cancer. I remember sitting beside her hospital bed, singing and playing guitar while her toes danced to the rhythm. She is no longer with us, but I have a photograph I took of her from behind my guitar. It’s blurry and imperfect, but to me, it’s priceless.
That photo taught me something I’ll never forget: you don’t realize how important a photograph is until it’s one of the only things you have left.
Three years later, I founded Jessica Woodall Photography with a focus on family portraits. Today, we’ve grown to serve families, businesses, and organizations through photography and videography, capturing everything from life’s milestones to corporate branding and events.
No matter what we’re photographing, our mission remains the same: preserving the people, moments, and stories that matter most.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Here’s a polished answer that sounds authentic and entrepreneurial:
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has taught me something valuable.
As a creative, one of the biggest lessons I learned early on was that I am not a numbers person. I quickly realized that trying to do everything myself wasn’t sustainable, so I learned the importance of outsourcing tasks like bookkeeping and finances to people who are experts in those areas.
Another lesson was that no one is going to sell Jessica Woodall Photography better than I can. In the beginning, I thought great work would speak for itself, but I learned that building a business requires building relationships. I had to get out from behind my computer, attend networking events, join organizations, meet people face-to-face, and become visible in my community.
I’ve also learned that providing as much value as possible is what creates long-term success. Whether I’m photographing a family, creating branding content for a business, or covering an event, I strive to give clients an experience that exceeds their expectations.
Building a business is never a straight line. There have been challenges, setbacks, and plenty of trial and error, but each obstacle has helped shape both me and Jessica Woodall Photography into what we are today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Jessica Woodall Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Jessica Woodall Photography is a full-service photography and videography company based in Wake Forest, North Carolina, serving clients throughout the Triangle and beyond.
What started as a passion for preserving family memories has grown into a business that helps both families and organizations tell their stories. We specialize in family portraits, weddings, branding photography, corporate headshots, event coverage, and professional videography. Whether we’re documenting a milestone for a family or creating content for a business, our goal is always the same: to capture authentic moments and create meaningful visual stories.
What sets us apart is our relationship-first approach. We believe great photography is about more than beautiful images. It is about making people feel comfortable, seen, and valued. We take the time to understand our clients, their goals, and the story they want to tell. That personal connection allows us to create images and videos that feel genuine rather than staged.
Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of working with families, small businesses, nonprofits, and major organizations across North Carolina. While we’re proud of the quality of our work, we’re most proud of the trust our clients place in us and the relationships we’ve built along the way. Many of our clients return year after year, allowing us to document their families, businesses, and milestones as they grow and evolve.
At our core, we believe that photographs and videos become more valuable with time. Whether it’s a family portrait hanging on a wall, a branding image that helps a business grow, or a video that tells a company’s story, we’re passionate about creating work that has a lasting impact.
We want readers to know that when they work with Jessica Woodall Photography, they’re not just hiring someone to take pictures. They’re partnering with a team that genuinely cares about preserving what matters most.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I don’t consider myself a natural risk-taker. In fact, I’m someone who likes to think things through, weigh the options, and make informed decisions. That said, some of the biggest and most meaningful moments in my life have come from taking risks.
Starting my own business was a major risk. There are no guarantees when you become an entrepreneur. You’re investing your time, energy, and finances into something you hope will succeed. Looking back, launching Jessica Woodall Photography was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, but it definitely required a leap of faith.
On a personal level, restructuring my family and choosing a path that aligned with who I truly am was another significant risk. It meant stepping into uncertainty and making difficult decisions without knowing exactly what the future would look like. While challenging, it ultimately led to growth, authenticity, and a deeper understanding of myself.
My perspective on risk is that not taking a risk can sometimes be the biggest risk of all. Growth rarely happens inside our comfort zones. I don’t believe in taking reckless risks, but I do believe in taking thoughtful risks when they align with your values, goals, and vision for the future. Some of the hardest decisions I’ve made have also been the most rewarding, both personally and professionally.
