Community Highlights: Meet Joseph Nyagah of Cornerstone Healthcare Staffing LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Nyagah.

Hi Joseph, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I was born and raised in Kenya; as an immigrant, I learned to see and appreciate all the many opportunities this great country USA, offers. I have been very much interested in healthcare since I was a small kid, I used to watch this Medical show called CHICAGO E.R. by George Clooney, and I admired how they used to treat people and save lives. That made me fall in love with healthcare, so when I came to America, I did not hesitate but went to school to become an Emergency Room Technician and a nurse in New York.

When I moved to North Carolina, I decided to work for an agency that worked very well with my family’s schedule, and the pay was better. Also, I was able to pick up the shifts of my choice; that freedom made me not want to work full time again but to work for an agency full time because of the work and personal life balance, which was very good because I was able to attend to my son’s soccer games or my daughter’s swimming competitions. After working for some time, I couldn’t help but notice the humongous staffing shortage in the healthcare sector, especially during the Covid 19 period when many healthcare staff resigned or changed careers after experiencing the trauma of losing so many patients. I could greatly help diving into the Industry because I had much experience as a nurse and a former Emergency Room Technician. I know what a healthcare staff needs and have experienced their pains and the hurdles they go through when short-staffed. I decided to register my own Company, Cornerstone Healthcare Staffing LLC, where the name “Cornerstone” has a personal connection to me.

As a small business entrepreneur, it takes a lot of hard work, persistence, resilience, and patience to run and operate smoothly and make hard decisions without having to follow your emotions. It took me 6 months before I got my first client, and it took me longer to adjust to working 24/7. Little did I know that the easiest part of the job was registering the Company, getting clients, staff, and contracts was a nightmare to reckon with.

Last but not least, I have a great team in the office who go above and beyond to ensure that Cornerstone grows and operates smoothly 24/7. We are currently based in North Hills, Raleigh, NC but are registered in many States as we try to expand nationally. It’s not easy, as people may think, especially with the new current changes which have affected our staffing Industry, but we work harder and more resilient to adjust to the times for us to succeed.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Lack of contracts, staff, working 24/7, especially within the first 6 months before I could hire office staff, I was the scheduler, payroll, recruiter, Manager, etc. Financial, it was hard to pay for my first small office before I got my first contract, I was late a couple of times, but I kept going, which eventually paid off. Discouragements and disappointments from friends and fellow nurses; when I first started, and I tried to recruit my fellow nurse friends, they thought I was crazy when I told them that I had an agency. Strangers initially supported me more than my close friends, which was a big lesson.

We specialize in staffing Nurses, CNAs, and Medication Aides to various facilities and hospital all over North Carolina and is registered in other States to expand nationally. We are known for our excellent customer service, competent and experienced nurses, and CNAs that we send to various facilities throughout North Carolina. We are apart from the others because we are a nurse-owned agency, so we always make sure that patients are our utmost priority, and one of our mottos is “patients come first.” Our readers should know that we are not just a job board, but we are an agency that cares for both our clients, staff, and patients; we work with our clients to make sure that we provide the best service ever, we staff them with Professional and experienced staff who go above and beyond their expectations. What matter to me is family and good health. My family will always be my priority and inspiration; it’s also because of the family that I decided to start Cornerstone so that I can work my schedule and spend more time with them. Everything can come and go, but a good and healthy family is the best success you can have.
