Community Highlights: Meet Krissy Reams of Krissy M. Reams Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krissy Reams.

Hi Krissy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi! I’m Krissy, a licensed therapist in Durham and Concord, NC. Directly after grad school, I worked as a home visitor for Union County’s Early Head Start program, working with children and their families, and helping them gain access to educational and social support. I eventually pivoted to community mental health, where I was able to work with an array of clients, which helped build my confidence as a mental health therapist. During Covid, I worked primarily from home while taking care of my newborn daughter. I recognized that I would be able to ultimately branch out and start my own practice, which allowed more flexibility with my schedule, as I wanted to spend more time with my little one. In 2022, I decided to leave community mental health and sub-lease an office to start seeing my own clients. Months later, I was diagnosed with stage 2b breast cancer. I managed to continue seeing clients throughout chemotherapy, radiation, and days after surgery. I believe my courage and strength to continue on with my business came from my family, friends and even my clients.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been smooth. It’s been a learning process, even three years in. Between understanding the business side of things, marketing, accounting, setting boundaries, it’s been an interesting ride.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with seven years of experience working with an array of clients. I work with individuals who struggle with depression, anxiety, stress, life changes and transitions, family and relationship issues, among other concerns that may impact your daily life who seek balance, understanding and peace. I am passionate about being part of the process of creating the life my clients desire and deserve and believes working collaboratively with individuals through goal-setting, empowerment and unconditional support is the key to making the necessary changes they need to experience life improvements.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Take your time. Ask questions. Reach out for help and give yourself grace. There is always room to grow. There is so much more to learn.
