Community Highlights: Meet Lecandra Edwards of The Coated Candy Shop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lecandra Edwards.

Hi Lecandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Hi, My Name is Lecandra Edwards. My family and friends have called me Candy since I was one year old. I was raised in Selma, NC, and stayed there most of my life. I spent most of my time at my Nanny Kay’s house, even on school nights. My Uncle Doug had Diabetes as a young child, and I watched my grandmother care for him. He was blind in both eyes, so he would ask me to give him his insulin dosage with meals. I would Click the Insulin pin to how many times he would say. I developed a love for helping people, even strangers. During my senior year of High School, I had my son. I knew at that moment I wanted more for him and me, even my future children and their children. Today I have a 13-year-old daughter as well, who wants to start a body care line. I’m honored to be able to help her on that journey!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
At 23, I was honored to sit for my North Carolina State Boards test for Practical Nursing. My first job was an hour away from one way. I worked 16 hours, sometimes going in at 3 pm and getting off at 3 pm the next day. Work slowed down for me when I got pregnant with my daughter. I had to go out on medical leave and move back home with my mom. I was humiliated and embarrassed. Seven days after delivery, I collapsed at the Bank and was diagnosed with Eclampsia and Pulmonary Embolism (a Blot clot that has traveled to the lungs). I was in the ICU and separated from my newborn baby. After I got stable enough, I remember being moved to L&D and my baby being brought back to the hospital to see me. After recovering from Postpartum depression and severe anxiety, I returned to work and school.

In 2017 I obtained my License to be a Registered Nurse. I have 15 years of experience in Acute Care, Hospice, Burn ICU, Pediatrics, Surgery (Pre/Post), Bariatric (weight loss), etc. I have wanted to own my Medspa/Fitness Center since 2019. I would search how I wished the flow to be and color schemes, all while working nights at the hospital. I looked up classes I would need and how much they cost and started working on things from that point. In 2021 I met someone I thought had the same vision as me. Unfortunately, moving my entire family 1200 miles away and leaving the highest-paying job of my career took advantage of me at best. Left Broke and hurt, I was left to do what I’ve always done. Work hard, but this time for me! I already had my LLC from my Hair Growth Oil Business. I started making Oil, body butter, hair masks, and more for my family on our natural hair journey. They loved the results, so here we are today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I was spending time at my Nanny kay’s house. My parents stayed next door to her for the first years of my life. We had a garden across the street, and I remember being with her. I’ll forever have those memories like us shelling peas or those Christmas Block Parties!
