Community Highlights: Meet Lena Jackson of The Resume Fix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lena Jackson.

Hi Lena, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story is an interesting one – I actually started my business quite by accident. I had never intended to start a business or to be in the career services field. I went to college for something completely different with the sole intention of landing a role in corporate America and then working my way up the ladder. As fate would have it – life would take me down a completely different path.

In college, I used to write resumes for friends and family members and they’d always get calls for interviews or land new jobs (I’d write my own resume and all I’d hear was crickets though, lol!). It’s so funny looking back because, at that time, I did not realize that I was actually creating the foundation for my business today.

Fast forward a few years later and I’d earned my degree and a good job with a great employer. However, I was stuck in a cubicle, dreading Monday mornings, and having zero passion for the work I was doing. I did not feel as though I was using my full potential or giving back to others in a substantial way. Keep in mind that all this while, I was still writing resumes for friends and family members…

Then one day it just sort of hit me and I had an epiphany moment: I actually loved writing resumes! Why not make this into a career? So that’s exactly what I did. I jumped on Google learned as much as I could about the industry in a short amount of time, turned in my two weeks’ notice, and took a huge leap of faith by starting the business. I knew in my heart that I could make this work and that’s exactly what I did. I haven’t looked back since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning a business is definitely NOT for the weary or faint of heart! You have to have very thick skin and be resilient as an entrepreneur. I wear all the hats! At any given moment I’m the CEO, salesperson, customer service representative, triage person, researcher, resume writer, coach – you name it and I do it all! What I’ve experienced is that no two days are ever the same when running a business. For instance, one day it may be so busy that I can’t keep up with the number of orders coming in the door but then other days where there is absolute silence! What I enjoy most is being able to weather these storms. I have learned to go with the flow of my business and appreciate all the challenges I face. They are exciting! I am also gentle with myself and I remind myself that if this were easy everyone would be doing it. So continuously I work towards improving my business, learning new information, and sharpening my skills so that I can provide better, leading-edge products and services to my customers. I appreciate that my business keeps me well-rounded in this manner.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Resume Fix. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW), Job Search Strategist, and Career Coach with 10+ years of experience. I always say that I do so much more than just sell resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, etc. I do not just sell coaching services either. Truly, what I do is to help my customers get unstuck in their careers. For instance, many of my customers approach me because they have been applying for jobs but are getting zero callbacks for interviews, or alternatively, they are landing interviews after interviews but are getting zero job offers. I take a deep dive into these dilemmas to figure out what is going on and how to fix it. My focus is always on the end result – what strategies can I help the client put into place to help them gain more interviews or ace their interviews to land the job of their dreams – the end result is at the center of everything I do.

In addition to that, my customers are at the heart of what I do – this is how I started the business, by helping loved ones and friends find the sweet spots of their careers. I hold onto this and it represents the one thing that makes my business and brand different – I do this because I care. I want to see people win in their careers. We spend so many hours at work, away from our families, away from the things we genuinely enjoy doing – we all deserve to have a career that we absolutely love. I think it is so important for me to give back and fully utilize my skills and abilities to make a difference in the lives of others.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Yes, my three favorite podcasts are “Accelerate 2 Great” by Nehemiah Davis, “The Vitamin B Show” by Brittany Michalchuk, and “Billy Gene is Marketing Offends the Internet” by Billy Gene. I’ve learned so much from these three entrepreneurs and they cover different aspects of my business – from self-care to social media marketing, to client relations – I am a sponge who soaks up all of their information.
