Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Kerr.
Hi Marissa, let’s start by talking about how your photography business started and how you got there?
It all started once I got my life back. I truly started from rock bottom. I was in active addiction for a few years. Those few years were just enough to cause me to lose everything, including myself. Eventually, I had finally had enough. When you realize you’re just existing and not living, that does something to you. I could write a book. But, long story short, God blessed me with two beautiful girls, and my life went from black and white, to color. I worked hard to rebuild my life from the ground up and even harder to feel confident in loving myself and who I was again. Everyone has always told me, I had the eye for photography. One day I thought, if I could rebuild my life, I surely can build a successful business. When people ask how I got where I am today, there’s only one thought that comes to mind. Truly, “from the ground up.” I’ll be two years in as a full-time photographer, this May. I’m thriving and will only continue to grow.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
“People have thrown dirt on my name, and others have thrown flowers. It’s all a garden to me.” (Barbra Howard/Sheryl Lee Ralph).
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A business that was solely build from the motivation my girls gave me, Aubrey and Sailor. You’ll often find me with my toes in the sand and camera in my hand. My best work is done out on the beach during golden hour/sunset. Of course, that is when it is the best lighting as well. I won’t allow my clients to do their session during a time of bad lighting and I always explain the reasoning and why behind it. I refuse to give my clients anything but my best work. Many clients new and repeat always compliment my color tone in edits. I don’t have a specialty, I do & love it all. Outdoors, I shoot, Family photography, Maternity photography, Lifestyle newborn photography, Cake smash photography, Weddings, Engagements, and Elopements. I also offer all of these services in my micro studio.
What sets me apart from other photographers, I make the session about the person and their story, not just getting pictures. We aren’t smiling and saying cheese for the entire duration of the session. We’re running to hug mommy, having daddy throw you in the air, pretending to be airplanes, and running around while I capture those raw, genuine, and authentic moments and emotions.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
A friend of mine, also another photographer, Kaleigh Parker. She was my mentor when I first started my journey. I owe a lot of thanks to her! My parents for providing me the space to have my very own micro studio (until I get big enough to get my own studio building, someday). My fiancé for always being there to hear me vent and being my rock. Oh, and putting up the many days of where I’m like “I’m working today, have fun with the girls.” My sister, Amanda, for being my kick butt assistant. My sister, Juliana, for being my model for many, many, sessions. My best photographer/friend, Victoria, for being my go to for a second shooter and vice versa. Last but not least, my repeat clients. Ya’ll ROCK! I love each and every one of you and am forever thankful and blessed.
