Hi Martha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve had a passion for design for as long as I can remember. Even as a little girl, I was rearranging furniture and choosing bold paint colors (like the iconic blue sponge-painted bedroom of my childhood), always seeking to create a certain feeling in a space. I cared deeply, even then, about the atmosphere of a room and the way design shapes how we live.
Design runs in my family. My grandfather owned one of the first industrial furniture companies in High Point, North Carolina, and my mother and great-grandmother passed down their love for antiques. Weekends were often spent exploring flea markets and antique stores, searching for pieces with character and history. I still remember hunting for over a year for the perfect dresser with a writing drawer. It lives in my childhood bedroom to this day and reminds me that design, when done thoughtfully, can hold meaning for a lifetime.
While I initially pursued a more traditional career path, design kept calling me back. What began as helping friends and family with their homes slowly grew into a business with purpose. I launched Martha Midgette Designs to create not just beautiful interiors, but personal ones, homes that support real life and celebrate the people who live in them.
Today, I work with families to design timeless, collected interiors that feel warm, functional, and deeply intentional. Every project is grounded in empathy and guided by classic principles, creating spaces that honor the past, enrich the present, and make room for what’s ahead.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most meaningful journeys, mine hasn’t been without its challenges. Building a business while raising a young family has required a lot of juggling, often working during weekend nap times, late nights, or early mornings to pursue something that reflects my values and supports the life I want for my family.
One of the biggest learning curves has been the business side of design. While creativity comes naturally, things like contracts, bookkeeping, and marketing took time to learn. I’ve built systems from the ground up, with plenty of trial and error along the way learning that small, consistent steps are what really build momentum.
There’s also the emotional side. When you put your heart into your work, it’s easy to take feedback or setbacks personally. And in design, problem-solving is constant; what looks like a simple wall on paper during a renovation might reveal unexpected construction issues. Shipments get delayed. Items arrive damaged or never arrive at all. But I’ve learned to view these moments as part of the process. Growth isn’t linear, and often the most challenging moments lead to the most meaningful outcomes. Through it all, I’ve become more grounded in my purpose and more confident in the kind of business I’m building.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Martha Midgette Designs?
Martha Midgette Designs is a full-service residential interior design studio based in Raleigh, North Carolina. We specialize in colorfully classic interiors that are collected, curated, and elevated. Our designs are both beautiful and functional, rooted in the belief that home is more than a place. It’s where life happens. Where families gather, memories are made, and stories unfold.
We work on a wide range of projects, from single-room furnishings to full-home renovations, additions, and new builds. Our clients are families who value quality, connection, and legacy. Every design decision is guided by how our clients live, what they love, and what will serve them long-term.
What sets us apart is our focus on meaningful, client-centered design. I bring empathy to every project, translating not just aesthetic preferences but emotional needs into timeless, intentional spaces. Our work blends classic foundations with fresh color and refined detail. It’s curated, never overdone. The result is a home that reflects who you are, evolves with you, and feels just right for how you live today and tomorrow.
I’m most proud that our designs don’t just look beautiful, they feel like home. Personal, relevant, and lasting. That’s the kind of design that endures.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Beyond the walls of the home, I also care about the legacy we’re building through our values, our relationships, and our role in the community. Martha Midgette Designs is grounded in empathy, integrity, and craftsmanship. To me, success isn’t just about growth; it’s about giving back. Whether through sourcing from local artisans, mentoring aspiring designers, or supporting local non-profit organizations that matter, I believe design should make a lasting impact not only in the homes we create, but in the communities they belong to.
