Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Fields.
Hi Natasha, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The entrepreneurial journey began with a desire to create a better future for myself and children. As a young mother, I wanted to build something that would provide stability, create opportunities, and show my children that they could dream beyond their circumstances.
The inspiration for the business came during conversations with my children’s father. We were young parents trying to change the narrative for our family, and entrepreneurship became a path that sparked my interest. While the connection to the idea started there, I took the vision and turned it into a reality.
What began as a hot dog cart grew through determination, long hours, and a willingness to learn along the way. There was no roadmap. I had to navigate challenges, setbacks, and moments of uncertainty while balancing motherhood and business ownership. Every obstacle became a lesson that helped me grow stronger as an entrepreneur.
Over the past five years, the business has evolved far beyond simply selling hot dogs. I’ve had the opportunity to cater events, serve corporate clients, partner with community organizations, and build meaningful relationships throughout the community. Each milestone has been a reminder of how far a small idea can go when you’re willing to stay consistent and keep showing up.
What makes me most proud is that my children have witnessed the journey first hand. They’ve seen the sacrifices, the hard work, the early mornings, and the late nights. They’ve also seen the rewards that come from perseverance and believing in yourself.
Today, my business represents much more than food. It represents resilience, faith, family, and the belief that it’s possible to create your own opportunities. My goal has always been to build something my children can be proud of while inspiring others to pursue their dreams, regardless of where they start.
The journey is still unfolding, but every step has reinforced one thing: success isn’t about where you begin—it’s about having the courage to keep going.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road.
Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced financial challenges, slow seasons, and the uncertainty that comes with running a small business. There were times when I invested everything I had into the business and still wasn’t sure what the next month would look like. Being a mother while building a business added another layer of responsibility because my children were always depending on me, whether business was good or bad.
One of the biggest challenges was learning how to navigate entrepreneurship without a blueprint. I had to figure out everything from permits and operations to marketing, customer service, and managing finances. There were days when weather affected sales, events were canceled, equipment needed repairs, or business simply wasn’t moving as fast as I hoped.
I’ve also experienced personal and business setbacks that forced me to start over, adapt, and keep moving forward. Those moments tested my faith, patience, and determination. Looking back, I realize that the hardest seasons taught me the most. They taught me resilience, problem-solving, and how to keep showing up even when things felt uncertain.
Today, when people see the business, they see the finished product. What they don’t always see are the early mornings, long nights, sacrifices, and lessons learned over the last five years. While the road hasn’t been easy, every challenge has helped shape the entrepreneur and person I am today, and for that I’m grateful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Mellow Dogs is more than a hot dog cart—it’s a brand built on resilience, community, and genuine connection. We specialize in serving quality hot dogs topped with our signature homemade chili, fresh homemade empanadas, and handcrafted lemonade made with only three simple ingredients. One of the greatest compliments I receive is from customers who tell me my homemade chili is the best they’ve ever had, and that’s something I take great pride in because every recipe is made with care and attention to quality.
What sets Mellow Dogs apart is the heart behind the business. I believe people remember how you make them feel just as much as they remember the food. I strive to create an atmosphere where every customer feels welcomed, appreciated, and valued. Over the years, I’ve built relationships with customers who have become like family, and that’s one of the things I’m most proud of.
From a brand perspective, I’m proud that Mellow Dogs has grown through consistency, perseverance, and the support of loyal customers who continue to recommend us to others. Every event, every returning customer, and every opportunity has been earned through hard work, quality food, and genuine hospitality.
I also want readers to know that Mellow Dogs is continuing to grow. While many people know us for our signature hot dogs, we’re expanding our catering services and introducing more homemade offerings that reflect the same quality and care we’ve become known for.
Above all, I want people to know that Mellow Dogs was built with purpose. It represents faith, family, perseverance, and the belief that something meaningful can grow from a simple idea. My goal has always been to serve food that brings people together while creating an experience that keeps them coming back—not just because the food tastes good, but because they feel like family every time they visit.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that networking isn’t just about collecting business cards—it’s about building genuine relationships. Some of my best opportunities have come from simply showing up consistently, treating people well, and letting my work speak for itself. You never know who is watching or where one conversation might lead.
My advice is to never be afraid to introduce yourself, ask questions, and learn from people who have more experience than you. Most successful entrepreneurs are willing to share their knowledge if you approach them with humility, respect, and a willingness to listen.
When it comes to finding a mentor, I don’t believe it always has to be one specific person. I’ve learned something valuable from many different people along my journey. Every business owner, customer, event organizer, and community partner has taught me something that helped me grow. Stay curious, remain teachable, and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.
Most importantly, be consistent. Opportunities often come after people have seen your work over time. Build your reputation by being reliable, serving people well, and honoring your commitments. In my experience, trust opens more doors than anything else.
I also believe in collaboration over competition. There is room for all of us to succeed. Building relationships, supporting other entrepreneurs, and celebrating each other’s wins creates a stronger community and often leads to opportunities you never expected.
