Community Highlights: Meet Nick Gange of On the Precipice Media, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Gange

Hi Nick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Since I was a child, I was always involved in visual arts and music classes whenever they were available in school. It was definitely my passion and something I enjoyed on a much deeper level than anything else. However, when it came time for college, arts/music didn’t seem like something I could reasonably pursue to make a living, and I built a career in the sciences for many years. I had experience with college-level courses in graphic design in the early 2000’s and discovered that I had a knack for it – my professor even offered to help me “get my foot in the door” doing freelance work. However, after graduating college in the sciences, I put design, art, and music on the backburner. But, I never lost interest. In my late 20’s, I started playing music again and learning to play new instruments, and then I began performing live with various bands. Many years later, just like for many of us during and after the pandemic, changes in my life led me to make a career change. I decided to pursue my passions in art, photography, and music. However, I had a lot to catch up on and learn – it had been 20 years since I had used software such as Photoshop and Illustrator at a professional level, and I hadn’t kept up with the capabilities of the newest cameras. So, I continued to save money and found some side-hustles to do while slowly starting the new business. I began researching cameras, photography techniques, and video-editing software and techniques so that I could start my business with as little money as possible while also maximizing the quality of my work. I’m still in the early stages of growing my business, but I’ve been fortunate to be part of some great projects with local bands and local events as I continue to learn and improve my skills and equipment. In 2025, my plan is to build out my website and market my services much more widely to hopefully grow into a more expansive business offering photography, videography, live sound, promotional/marketing content creation, and more. Using photography and video, I hope to help local artists, performers, bands, event coordinators, venues, local government organizations, local non-profits, and local business owners get the recognition and exposure they deserve, by highlighting their unique and amazing skills and contributions that add so much to our lives here in the Triangle!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a continuous learning process that I’ve tried to take slowly. From the start, I’ve tried to only take on projects that I feel I can do really well and projects for which I can provide the client with a high-quality final product. Since I started my business on a shoe-string budget, it sometimes limited my capabilities and the quality of the photos or videos I could take of live performances in low-light situations, for example, and limited my video-editing capabilities due to computer limitations, etc. Other challenges involve proper pricing for my services, to both serve my clients well but to also make sure I don’t undervalue the time and effort it takes to do high-quality work. However, those challenges are all learning opportunities and have made me better at my craft. As I’ve completed more projects, I’ve been able to gradually buy better equipment and continuously improve the quality of my final product, while also making the entire process more efficient. Whether it’s providing photography or promo videos for live band performances, other types of artistic performances, or events, I strive to continuously learn and improve my work, while also continuously working to improve my customers’ experiences throughout the entire process working together. I love having very satisfied and happy customers. I love creating amazing memories of performances or events with unique photos and video that capture the true feeling and energy of these once-in-a-lifetime moments in my clients’ lives.
