Community Highlights: Meet Rachel Slauer of Slauer Events & Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Slauer.

Hi Rachel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I fell in love with weddings as I was planning my own wedding almost 8 years ago now! After our wedding was over, I was itching to plan another event. I started helping friends, then friends of friends, and finally made the leap to becoming official. I got my website up and running, purchased insurance, created a pricing structure, and got going!

After almost 3 years of business in Atlanta, my husband Ryan got a job at Duke. Thus, Slauer Events expanded. I’ve now been in business for 6 years and have enjoyed every second of it! Connecting with brides, grooms, and their families is such a joy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the struggles along the way have been:

1. Setting boundaries. When you own your own business and make your own schedule it is easy to let work creep into every area of life. In the last year or two, I’ve been able to set clear work times and that has been a game-changer!

2. Being confident. It’s easy to compare yourself to other planners and industry professionals, thinking they are doing better or doing more than I am. I have been learning to appreciate the successes of others while also maintaining my own confidence.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Slauer Events & Design?
We design, plan, and coordinate weddings and other wedding-related events (rehearsal dinners, day-after brunches, etc.). We especially enjoy full-service planning clients because we get to walk alongside clients from day one. It is so rewarding to build a vision, refine it, plan it, and then bring it to life for our couples.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Covid-19 taught us all too much! For me, I was challenged to be as flexible and generous with our policies as possible. As a small business, we have to keep policies in place to protect ourselves, but whenever I could be flexible, I was. And my amazing clients were also such good sports. It was tough being a Covid bride/groom, and it was also tough being a wedding professional during a pandemic. I was so proud of the grace and understanding that flowed from couples and wedding vendors alike.
