Community Highlights: Meet Ramona Cox of Notes Coffee House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramona Cox

Hi RAMONA, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2012, my husband and I founded Rock ‘n Roll High School, a music school offering lessons in guitar, drums, voice, and piano. Our vision was to create a space where rock bands could perform, complete with an auditorium featuring a stage, professional sound, and lighting. Over the years, many students have come through our doors, with some even going on to pursue careers in music.

A few years ago, I had the idea of opening a coffee shop in the same building as Rock ‘n Roll High School. Although I had no barista experience, my love for coffee and crafting delicious lattes led me to open Notes Coffee House. I kept the music theme alive by naming drinks after artists and songs, like the Purple Rain (a blackberry and lavender latte) and Fleetwood Macchiato (a caramel and vanilla latte). The shop features both a seasonal menu and a Signature Menu.

In December, I sold Rock ‘n Roll High School to focus solely on growing Notes Coffee House, and I couldn’t be more excited for the journey ahead.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Opening Rock ‘n Roll High School was a challenge because there was nothing like it in the area at the time. We had to build everything from scratch—programs, curriculum, and more. I also took on scheduling and coordinating the bands, which came with a steep learning curve. Fortunately, the school grew quickly, mostly through word of mouth.

Starting Notes Coffee House presented its own set of challenges, particularly with the space. Originally a lounge area for parents and students, I had to transform it into a fully functioning coffee shop. Since opening in October 2022, the biggest hurdle has been visibility, as it’s tucked inside Rock ‘n Roll High School. However, as more people discover it—especially through Google and word of mouth—Notes Coffee House continues to grow steadily.
