Community Highlights: Meet Rashmi Kumar of Optimize Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashmi Kumar.

Hi Rashmi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a practicing physical therapist since 2008, and my path into this field was driven by a genuine interest in helping people move better and feel more confident in their bodies. I started out working in traditional clinical settings, where I gained a lot of experience early on, but I also began to see the limitations of a system that often prioritizes speed and volume over individualized care.
As I spent more time with patients, it became clear to me that people do best when they feel heard and when their treatment is tailored to them, not just their diagnosis. I invested heavily in continuing education and refined a more hands-on, movement-based approach. Over time, I saw patients who hadn’t made progress elsewhere start to improve when their care was more personal and intentional.
That shift in how I practiced ultimately led me to start Optimize Physical Therapy. I wanted to build a practice where patients didn’t feel rushed and where therapy focused on long-term results, not just short-term fixes. Starting and growing the practice has come with its challenges, but it’s been incredibly rewarding to create something aligned with my values and to see patients return to activities they once thought were no longer possible.
Today, I continue to focus on delivering one-on-one care rooted in education, trust, and meaningful outcomes. I’m proud of how far the practice has come and excited about where it’s headed.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many people in healthcare, I faced early frustration working within systems that didn’t always allow the time or flexibility needed to provide the kind of care I believed in. Balancing productivity expectations with quality of care was challenging, and there were moments when it felt like the system worked against both providers and patients.
Starting my own practice brought a different set of struggles. There was a steep learning curve — from navigating insurance and administrative demands to building trust in a new business from the ground up. There were periods of uncertainty, especially early on, where growth felt slow and every decision carried weight.
On top of that, learning to balance clinical work with running a business wasn’t easy. Wearing multiple hats, managing time, and avoiding burnout required constant adjustment. However, each challenge clarified my priorities and strengthened my commitment to practicing with integrity.
Looking back, those struggles were essential. They pushed me to be more intentional, resilient, and grounded in why I chose this path in the first place. The road hasn’t been smooth, but it has been meaningful, and I wouldn’t trade the lessons it’s taught me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Optimize Physical Therapy focuses on helping people overcome back pain, neck pain, and shoulder pain so they can move with confidence again. Many of our patients come to us feeling frustrated after trying other treatments without lasting relief. Our approach is centered on understanding the root cause of pain rather than simply managing symptoms.
We’re known for our individualized, one-on-one care. Sessions are unrushed and tailored to each person’s movement patterns, posture, and daily demands. We combine hands-on manual therapy, targeted exercise, and patient education to restore mobility, reduce pain, and help prevent future flare-ups.
We specialize in complex and persistent spine and shoulder conditions, including chronic low back pain, neck pain related to posture or work demands, and shoulder issues such as rotator cuff injuries and frozen shoulder. Many patients find us after plateauing elsewhere, and we take pride in helping them move forward.
What I’m most proud of is that the practice has grown almost entirely through word of mouth. Optimize Physical Therapy stands for thoughtful care, attention to detail, and treatment that prioritizes long-term results over quick fixes.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best about Raleigh is how easy it is to feel connected — from the friendly neighborhoods to the parks and trails, there’s a real sense of community and energy. What I like least is how quickly it’s growing; traffic can be frustrating, and sometimes it feels like the city is racing ahead of itself. Still, the sense of opportunity and the people here make it a place I’m proud to call home.
