Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberto Williamson.
Hi Roberto, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstories.
My life changed in 2013 when I was arrested on a drug charge. I was incarcerated for a few months. While away from society, I took the time to analyze and navigate through deep thought about my future choices, whether I would continue down the same road or make conscious decisions that could change my life and the lives around me. After my release, four years of probation was a consequence that met me head-on after those metal doors closed behind me. I was convinced that my life needed to change at this moment. I began searching for new interests and found that I love culinary. I entered Triad Community Kitchen (TCK) in 2014 and studied Culinary Arts. One year later, I was certified as a Chef. Charlotte, North Carolina, became my following geographical location, where I continued to pursue my passion as a Chef. My studies landed me with several five-star restaurants where my skills were sharpened, and my knowledge expanded to build upon my expertise. Although I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the restaurants, I knew it was time to walk out on faith and become independent in what I loved doing. My first experience as an entrepreneur was very exciting. I could barely sleep! To my surprise, I sold out! My first catering consisted of Chicken and shrimp fettuccine, Italian bread, and a house salad. The positive reviews and support made my walk of faith all worth it! I continued building my brand, business, and company; Delicious Art Catering was created.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Although my journey has had some smooth moments, I’ve had some rough ones. I lost my father in 2015 and then my mother four years later to cancer. The greatest secret when it comes to cooking comes from Mama Gwen. She taught me everything that I know. Losing both parents feels like simultaneously putting me in a dark space in life. I was deeply lost in depression, so I turned to alcohol for the answer.
Moreover, gambling and drugs became my best friends. Suicidal thoughts eventually began to sink in. Being in this mental state finally affected my business and close relationships; I started to lose customers, and many of my close relationships began to die. While it felt like everything was falling apart, becoming homeless was another burden that added to my weight. I began to lodge in hotels until my savings was emptied. Immediately, my living space went from a hotel room to a car. I was devastated and torn with nowhere to turn. I soon felt led to visit the mountains, knowing that The Highest was tugging at my heart to get my attention. When I visited Pilot Mountain alone, I received the grace to love myself and become one with The Highest. Today, I can say that I was divinely covered during this time of distress. This needed to happen for the greater change, the change within me! Also, I’ve had the honor to cater for Gospel Artist Rich Tolbert Jr. and Rapper Young Thug
