Community Highlights: Meet Scott Danielson of Capital Discount Furniture

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Danielson.

Scott, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our modest furniture “business” started in January of 2013, which was inside an 800 sq ft storage unit and selling a limited amount of merchandise on Craigslist. My wife (Jenny) and I wanted to chase the American Dream to give the local community something different while providing everyone the value and service they deserve. Work-life balance was very important to us though, so for years we were BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Jenny (teaching degree) did sales, while I (no degree or furniture experience) focused on the warehouse and deliveries. However, we really did everything necessary day to day, which included cleaning the bathrooms, sweeping the floors, or even unloading a 53′ semi-truck as needed. It wasn’t easy, but nothing great in life ever is. We were also aware that only about 22% of small businesses survive their first year, but then 50% of those businesses fail within the first five years. Statistics were against us… and still to this day. 

We didn’t start with any loans or help in any way… it was all on us and the $10,000 we managed to scrap together to make our dream a reality. As the years passed, we made necessary calculated moves to adapt and grow. We started adding more brands, moved into larger facilities, and added to our team… some those individuals are still with us to this day! We ultimately became Triangle’s Highest Rated Furniture Store while being recognized by WRAL, Cary Magazine, Cary Living, INDY Week, N&O… or even on Google, Yelp, Facebook, and BBB. 

Our biggest and scariest milestone happened only two years ago in the midst of the pandemic when we moved our 15,000 sq ft operation to a 50,000 sq ft facility in RTP. This opened up many doors while we navigated the many challenges surrounding the pandemic… timeframes, supply chains, transportation, costs, staffing, etc. Unfortunately, we have seen a large number of local small businesses close shop the past couple of years, specifically furniture stores. However, we are proof that with the proper planning and projecting… there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Even with the looming recession… there’s still much to look forward to for us all! We are happy to share our story so we can give other small businesses HOPE during these tough times and to remind everyone they are not alone. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since we started the business from the ground up, we had to learn on the fly. We didn’t have any help or guidance, so we took baby steps along the way. The pandemic was the hardest time for us and so many others since it was an unprecedented time, and there were so many elements out of our control. 

We’ve been impressed with Capital Discount Furniture, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a furniture and mattress retailer that provides a dozen different trusted brands at the best prices, which we GUARANTEE. So, our biggest advantage with furniture is our prices and overall selection, but what really sets us apart is our team and customer service. We believe that’s ultimately why we’ve maintained such a great reputation in our local market and keep the support we have. We are proud of the many awards we have won over the years and just being recognized for our efforts. 

Unlike many stores, we do not have a particular niche due to the variety of brands we carry. So, we truly have a good, better, and best with everything we offer. Therefore, we have folks that will come in with a tight budget and looking for value and savings. Then, we will have folks come in without a budget and wanting quality or custom furnishings. 

What do you think about happiness?
What makes us all happy is the experience we provide our customers… from start to finish. We are truly reinventing the furniture buying experience and excited to continue doing so with everyone moving to the area.
