Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Townsend.
Hi Shaun, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’d like to say I started my journey when I was the age of 16 and from then on, the rest is history. I started the martial art Taekwondo at that time and from there, it opened so many doors to my current state in life. I now own my own family business with my older brother and teach well over 50 students. Within that journey, I was able to get into stunt acting with a film company which we sponsor named Street Nerds Productions. So, in the span of 12 almost 13 years, my life has definitely broadened to an interesting time period!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road less traveled will never be smooth, remember that. There were many hardships along the way. I got to a point in my life where I was focused on getting job experience rather than finishing school that it taught me the importance in consistency, which Taekwondo instilled in me. I was taught to always do my best and to never give up. To maintain my spirit. I knew I was destined to be a leader in something but I wasn’t sure in what per se. I took a break from martial arts to find myself, to work at different jobs, or learning new skill sets, only to come back to martial arts and find my true purpose in teaching! It all hit me full circle but I realized my talents remained in my martial arts abilities which then turned into a lifelong career for me. I realized I was tired of working for someone else’s dream and not my own. Covid was no slouch either. 2020 was the hardest year I had experience financially, emotionally, mentally, and physically. If it weren’t for the discipline I learned over the years through martial arts, who knows where my life would have taken me. I always kept in mind to keep on going and to never stop, and I have been better than I have been this year in 2021.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Core Taekwondo Performance Center is the embodiment of the person myself and my brother portray to ourselves and the world. Courage, indomitable spirit, respect, confidence, and discipline. As teachers, we understand our purpose is to pour these qualities back into the community in which our establishment breeds. Taekwondo is a family-oriented sport, so we have students who are learning under us as a family. Mothers. daughters, grandparents, and dads are all able to enjoy the learning experience with each other and that is what I love about my profession…no one is left out! We are known to medal at every national championship tournament in the country, we actually got gold medal this year! We also give back to the community. Before covid, we were traveling to different schools and giving anti-bullying seminars to explain the importance in keeping the community safe through martial arts. We also traveled to different schools and substituted for PE teachers and taught taekwondo lessons to bring awareness to bullying.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I have learned was to stay true to myself. There are so many opportunities in this world to be the best version of you but…that is impossible to achieve if you are following the masses. You have to create the wave of opportunity for yourself before you can do it for others!
