Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherry Hensley.
Hi Sherry, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I married and started a family at a young age. I completed my college education while my three children were completing theirs! I entered the field of medicine immediately because it fit my personality and I found great joy in helping others. It wasn’t long before I was offered managerial positions at several medical facilities, both in the Durham and the Charlotte area.
While fulfilling my numerous responsibilities as a medical practice manager, this included teaching/training many student interns, which I loved. While teaching a medical program prn at a local college, I accepted a full-time college instructor position for several years and was able to share real-time experiences and knowledge with many students–many of which now hold privileged positions at Duke and UNC facilities.
Despite my love of teaching, I truly missed my patients! A management position opened up near my home and I decided to return to my first love. After just a few years, an additional opportunity arose to co-own and operate what we made into a “hybrid” primary care/immediate care facility. With the healthcare landscape shifting so fast, where patients have to choose between the care they need and the cost they fear, now I had the opportunity to really help our community! We have been voted “Best Medical Facility” in our area (which is quite the honor, considering we are located smack in the middle of Duke Primary/Urgent and UNC Primary/Urgent). We were nominated “Best New Business” this year by our Chamber and “Best Medical Facility” by Chapel Hill Magazine this year and last year…..and we’ve only been open 15 months!
I couldn’t do what I do without the great team I have at Village Medical Care and I truly look forward to each day that we are able to help as many as we can live healthier, happier lives.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were definitely struggles along the way. My parents lived many miles away and the travel back and forth to be there for my parents’ major health issues, while caring for my own family, was very difficult. I also experienced my own health scares and family concerns while sandwiched in between all of the above. Some days, the physical and emotional toll it took seemed overwhelming.
As you know, we’re big fans of Village Medical Care, PLLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are an independently-owned primary care and immediate care facility. We bring a health care proponent that focuses on quality and individual care, over quantity. That mission is at least part of why the word “village” is in the name of the practice.
It’s taken a bit from the proverb of ‘it takes a village’ and it holds true for us that, when it comes to health care here and throughout the U.S., there’s a concept that focuses on money and seeing as many patients as you can in as short a period as you can. Our attitude is more of a collaboration with the health care community where we are filling a gap for patients who don’t have primary care providers, or are unable to see their primary care providers, as well as caring for their immediate/urgent healthcare needs. Our venture is built on a foundation of principles that mirror our commitment to the community. Our women-owned business is based on compassionate care and love of community.
Our 5-star rating from our patients is also a reflection that we are making a difference in their lives and in the community. There are many things that set us apart from other medical facilities in our area. Our patients can be seen by appointment or they are welcome to “walk-in” whenever needed. Their wait time is very minimal in comparison to other walk-in clinics. I am most proud of our additional outdoor structure where those who are immuno-compromised can be seen without being exposed to additional viruses/illnesses. Just as important, our disabled patients and those with special needs travel from as far away as Raleigh, Durham, Greensboro, and surrounding counties, to utilize this special area. It’s absolutely wonderful to hear them express their joy and appreciation of not having to get out of their vehicle, set up their wheel chair, wait in a waiting area of sick patients for an hour or more, then get back into their vehicle, drive to the pharmacy and wait another 30 min or more for their medication. At Village Medical Care, they are in the comfort of their vehicle, wait time is very minimal and our kind, neighboring pharmacy next door will even bring their medication right to their vehicle, too! Patients utilizing this area have been checked in, vitals completed, have seen an awesome healthcare provider, and have their medication in hand from the pharmacy–all in under 30 minutes without compromising any of their care! To them, this is invaluable!
We also have an area designed for our patients with sensory concerns as well as our patients on the Autism spectrum. Our staff is trained to make these visits as accommodating and stress-free as possible….both for the patient and the caregiver!
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lessons I’ve learned on my journey into healthcare is that presence matters as much as knowledge. Skills, training, and protocols are essential, but people often remember how you made them feel—whether you listened without rushing, respected their dignity, or met them where they were in a difficult moment. I’ve learned that healing isn’t always about fixing; sometimes it’s about showing up with empathy, humility, and consistency. That perspective has shaped how I approach helping others—not just as patients or problems to solve, but as people trusting us during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
