Community Highlights: Meet Stacy Carlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Carlin.

Hi Stacy; we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from New Jersey; I grew up with an older brother, and my parents have been married since 1955. My upbringing and observing my parents’ relationship would have greatly affected how things would play out for me once I was an adult, but what do they say? Never assume. Right out of high school, I went to nursing school, graduated, and worked as a nurse. After I got married, I thought my relationship with my husband would grow and become stronger, but it became more distant. It was like a deck of cards you spend so much time building. You put so much effort into what you think will be the perfect future, and every time a breeze or wind comes by, it crumbles.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Looking back, I would have to say my biggest obstacle was making the decision and building up the stamina to get out of my marriage, knowing that I would have to start my life over again. Finding a job, getting health insurance, figuring out how to keep my home, and just being the glue to my family that I have always been. But knowing the strong person I am, I knew I would be able to do it. It would be a long haul and a lot of work but the most amazing, positive outcome. I could not live that way anymore with the negativity and the feeling of heaviness in the home. Unfortunately, when you’re in a narcissistic relationship, you put so much energy into everything. Still, meanwhile, life is being sucked out of you, and you lose your self-esteem and purpose in life. That’s not something anyone should have to do. That is not a healthy relationship.
