Conversations with Adam Bennett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Bennett.

Hi Adam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Henry David Thoreau once said, “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” I didn’t really know what that meant until one day I snapped a picture for some friends of mine using their camera and it clicked. I handed the camera back to them and they told me I had an eye for photography and that I should consider it. Fast forward a few years and a couple career changes later, I stepped out on my own to pursue photography full time. It’s the first job/career I’ve ever had that feels right. I get excited to go to work and that is a new feeling for me. Being with the band and behind the scenes for concerts has been a great experience. Working on events and capturing the essence of the crowd and benefits the event brings to the area is a great challenge but always a welcome one. Growing up as the son of musician I’ve always been surrounded by creative folks. Venturing out into the world as a full time creative has definitely been eye-opening and challenging but worth it so far. I’m excited for the challenge to be able to stay on top of it and hopefully make a living being a full time photographer.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m not sure if anyone has ever began a journey of self employment as a creative without struggling somewhere along the lines. I attempted to give it a shot in my spare time while working a different full time job but that turned out to incredibly frustrating and led to a burnout. Thankfully I have an incredible support system at home and I was able to give it a shot going full time.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to think of myself as a documentary style photographer. I prefer the candid, fleeting moment to the composed, styled photo. My wife calls my approach the, “Fly on the wall, ” approach. My favorite things to photograph are concerts and events but I also love wandering the streets looking for the unexpected to call out to me. I know there is a lot of power in the composed photo and it allows you to be incredibly creative and create a photo you’d be proud to show the world or one you could use to point to power, but there is a genuineness to the candid, a humanity that might get overlooked if you’re not looking at the right thing at the right time. I guess I would say I’m known for catching the moment, in the moment. When I shoot anything at all, my hope is that you feel as if you’re right there with me, seeing the shot as I do.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I think the new answer to that is, “Like, follow, and share,” on social media. But to honest I think reaching out to via email or DM on Instagram would be the most effective way. I’m always open to discuss projects or philosophy or art/creative process with fellow creatives.
