Today we’d like to introduce you to Ally Ingold.
Hi Ally, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my career in property management in 2016, working with Section 8 and Rural Development housing in Greensboro, North Carolina. I quickly realized how much I connected with the work and the people I was serving, and in my first year, I was fortunate enough to receive the President’s Award with Partnership Property Management. It was an early affirmation that I had found a career I was passionate about and had a real talent for.
Affordable housing was incredibly challenging, though. We often didn’t have the resources to make necessary repairs, and evictions were unfortunately a significant part of the job. I cared deeply about my residents, but I often felt frustrated by how little power I had to change their circumstances. When you’re working within a government system, you can advocate for better policies and vote for leaders who support the causes you believe in, but there are still limits to what you can change from within.
When the pandemic hit, I decided it was time for a change. I knew I wanted to remain in an industry where I could make a difference, but I wanted to work for a company that had the resources to properly care for its properties and, in turn, its residents.
That’s when I found Clachan Properties and May Hosiery Lofts.
Clachan’s commitment to preserving historic buildings, creating beautiful homes, and cultivating a genuine sense of community immediately resonated with me. I was able to take everything I had learned in affordable housing—the empathy, patience, problem-solving, and understanding of how important a home can be—and apply it in a completely different environment.
Since joining Clachan, I’ve had the opportunity to grow tremendously and I’m proud of what our team has accomplished. May Hosiery Lofts was named Community of the Year by the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association in 2024, followed by Best Resident Experience and Dynamic Team in 2025. We were also named Best Apartment Building in Burlington by Business Rate in both 2025 and 2026, and have received seven Opiniion awards since 2023, including Best Management, Best Maintenance, and Best Move-In Experience.
For me, those awards mean much more than having a trophy case. They represent the kind of community I hoped to cultivate when I first entered this industry. My early career taught me why this work matters, and Clachan has given me the opportunity and resources to put that belief into practice.
I think my career has really come full circle. I started by learning just how deeply housing can impact someone’s life, and today, I have the opportunity to invest in a community where people genuinely enjoy calling their home—and I’m incredibly proud of that.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This industry has ebbs and flows that are deeply tied to the state of the economy. My biggest struggle was learning how to navigate negative emotions associated with the harder sides of the job. Being the one to file eviction against someone is incredibly hard – and this was especially true during the pandemic when so many people were struggling with sudden income loss and a changing world. It also took me a long time to learn how to navigate the many roles that come with being a property manager. You are not just an admin for the community, but also a therapist, accountant, logistics operator for packages, event coordinator, marketing manager, emergency services coordinator, technical support, historic steward, conflict mediator, and more!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work in property management requires me to wear a lot of hats. I oversee the day-to-day operations of May Hosiery Lofts, from financial performance, leasing, and vendor management to resident relations, marketing, events, team development, and compliance. But at the heart of it, I specialize in resident experience and community building. I’m known for being hands-on, creative, and willing to think outside the box to solve problems and create meaningful experiences for our residents. I also partner with local businesses and non-profit organizations to ensure our presence makes a positive impact not just building wide, but city and county wide.
What I’m most proud of is the reputation we’ve built at the May Hosiery Lofts. The awards and recognition we’ve received are great, but what means the most to me is knowing they reflect the relationships we’ve cultivated and the community we’ve invested in. We have 4.8 stars on google and I’m personally named for customer service and kindness in over 40 of them. That feels amazing – to know that my teams work is so exceptional that people want to tell their friends about us.
What sets me apart is my ability to balance structure with humanity. I manage May Hosiery with respect for company policies and local law, strong financial discipline, and high accountability, while never losing sight of the fact that people live here. Our residents are more than just leases, and I try to prove that to them every opportunity I get. I don’t separate performance from care because I strongly believe one fuels the other.
How do you define success?
I think that success means something different to each of us. Some of us are content with reaching smaller, simpler goals while others are reaching for the stars and don’t believe in a bar. I think for me success means leaving the community a little better than I found it each day. Sometimes that’s in small ways that are unseen and unrecognized, and other times it’s in big ways that win us some pretty cool awards.
