Conversations with April Bentley

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Bentley

Hi April, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always wanted to try photography, so in 2012, I finally bought my first DSLR camera. From there, I took some classes at my local community college. I researched all I could to learn about photography, watching many YouTube videos. I also went to photo meet-ups with other photographers to help me learn new things. There was lots of hands-on training. In 2015, I started my photography business. It has grown every year since then. In 2015, I also discovered a non-profit called Capturing Hopes, which takes photos of babies and their families in the NICU. On top of my own business, I have been volunteering with them for 10 years. This meant so much to me as I was a mom of a NICU baby 21 years ago, and it meant a lot to help. Photography has been such a great addition to my life. I am passionate about it and feel that photos are essential.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s not smooth, but what would life be like if everything were easy? I struggled with social anxiety, and photography has helped bring me out of my shell. Working weddings and meeting new people was scary, but it has been great. I have met many wonderful people who have become friends throughout my career. It is easy to compare yourself to others and not feel good enough, but I learned that comparison steals your joy. I only try to be my better self, not better than others. I encourage others and even offer classes and mentoring now.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Im a photographer, and I am proud that I never gave up and always strive to improve daily. I also love volunteering in the NICU and giving families photos of their sweet babies.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Yes, starting my business was a risk. I was unsure of how it would go. If I had never taken the risk, I wouldn’t be where I am. Success takes failure first. We learn from our mistakes.
