Conversations with Bert Reed

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bert Reed.

Hi Bert, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my photography journey over 25 years ago, back in the days of film—long before digital cameras were part of everyday life. I was drawn to the creative process behind film photography, especially the magic that happened in the darkroom as each image came to life. That passion naturally evolved into photographing weddings, where I could combine artistry with storytelling. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of capturing more than 1,500 weddings, each one unique and meaningful in its own way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. When I started, everything was shot on film, so there wasn’t the instant feedback we have today. Every image required careful planning and technical precision—you had to truly know your camera and trust your instincts. Transitioning from film to digital was another big learning curve, not just with equipment but with the expectations that came along with it. Running a photography business also brought its own challenges—long hours, managing client expectations, and keeping creativity alive even during busy seasons. Photographing weddings means there are no do-overs; you’re capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments in real time. But those challenges taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying passionate about my craft.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in wedding photography and have always loved capturing real, emotional moments between people. Over the years, I’ve developed a reputation for being able to shoot in challenging lighting—especially low-light situations—which has allowed me to photograph weddings in all kinds of settings. My technical background helps me stay calm under pressure, but what I think really sets me apart is how I connect with my clients.

I want people to feel comfortable in front of the camera so their personalities shine through. What I’m most proud of isn’t just the photos themselves, but the relationships I’ve built and the trust couples place in me to capture one of the most important days of their lives.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of honesty. Early on, it was tempting to tell clients what they wanted to hear just to secure the job, but I quickly realized that being truthful always leads to better results. I’m upfront about my limitations and clear about what clients can realistically expect. That transparency builds trust, and it sets the tone for a strong working relationship. In the end, people appreciate honesty far more than overpromises.
